For those unlucky ones unfamiliar with NICO's music: NICO's second album (her sole release on Elektra label) remains one of the most stunning, amazing pieces of music ever recorded, featuring some of the most uncompromising, dark, brooding, hermetic poetic visions ever delivered by ANY popular artist, ANYWHERE. It really has to be heard to be believed. Oddly enough, in this dirge-like context, NICO’s bland, distant (and sometimes dissonant), siren-like voice is a huge advantage – a wonderfully expressive instrument of the sentiments long frozen in space and time: sentiments that are both billion light years away and immediately present at the same time.

We consider NICO's Marble Index to be a female mirror-image – or perhaps a female HALF - of Tim Buckley's STARSAILOR.  Both albums are fiercely unyielding (occasionally even hostile)  visions of the scary, almost otherworldly, beauty which is never easily accessible and which does not lend itself to easy comprehension. This is the music that requires – indeed, demands – both intense attention and personal involvement; but for those who can find energy, will and perseverance to work their way through the album's wonderfully convoluted structure and aesthetics (the music unfolds like some strange religious ritual - - almost like a human sacrifice),  NICO's work offers a great reward, of sorts: a lifetime's worth of trips into the human soul's dark side. Beware, though – with NICO, the return ticket is NOT  guaranteed.

NICO lives on – and, oddly, now, in her death, more than ever before !.

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS NEAR MINT. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new. (NOTE: minor staining noted in the trail-off vinyl (dead wax) on side 2; this affects ONLY the trail-off vinyl, NOT the groove area, and is only a minor visual nuisance; we suspect the staining comes from poly-lined inner sleeve which appears to have stuck to the wax for a little too long during the storage; these marks appear ONLY on side 2; none whatsoever  on side 1)

(b)            The record comes in a poly-lined inner sleeve, which has - apparently with success - shielded the vinyl from the harmful impact of elements over many years!

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

THE COVER IS NEAR MINT !

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3  (front side) and 2 (back side)

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the seams (nothing significant)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-        No wrinkles or creases

-        No yellowing from aging

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams

-        No peel-off marks

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
