Nick Drake's final album carries a special poignancy and also a very special mystique for his fans and admirers. It is a stripped-down, austere masterpiece of psychedelic folk minimalism, laden with pervasive feeling of impending doom and gloom, but still very warm, humane and accessible. There is no doubt in the total sincerity of this album: a short while later, Drake was found dead, a victim of an apparent suicide. This is Nick Drake's equivalent of Tchaikovsky's Sixth Symphony: a statement of farewell to this world; a final parting with all earthly things, possessions and friends.
One thing that sets this album apart from its predecessors is the instrumental sparseness : this is just Nick Drake, his deep, dark, brooding voice and his guitar. Only one track has orchestral backing, apparently added by Island Studios after Drake supplied the master tapes (in an almost clandestine fashion, sending it from his home via mail, without ever setting foot in the studio). This time, neither John Cale nor Richard Thompson were on hand to assist with arrangements and production.
The result is an album which, along with Tim Buckley's "Starsailor", Nico's "Marble Index" or Joy Division's "Closer" stands practically alone in the Pantheon of Rock's loneliness, desolation and despair. While the celestial, ethereal beauty of this work cannot be questioned , we do not recommend listening to this album if you are currently on anti-depressants.
The album, oddly, was only the second album to be issued in the United States (Drake's second album, Bryter Lyter, was issued only posthumously, on the Antilles label), it sold poorly - the death of its author didn't help sales one bit - and the few surviving copies are exquisitely hard to find. Original pressings of this album appear on eBay only once in Blue Moon - or, shall we say - only once in Pink Moon. This is one of the precious few occasions to grab this rare bird, before it flies away.

· CONDITION:
· RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) WE GRADE THE VINYL AS NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs - are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible, and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.
(b) The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.
(c) The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(d) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
