Album Notes
The New York Dolls: Sylvain Sylvain (vocals, guitar, piano); Johnny Thunders (vocals, guitar); David Johansen (vocals, harmonica, gong); Arthur Harold Kane (bass); Jerry Nolan (drums).<BR>Additional personnel: Buddy Bowser (saxophone); Todd Rundgren (keyboards).<BR>It's hard in retrospect, with all the alternative rock water that's passed under the bridge, to articulate the impact the New York Dolls' incendiary debut had on its release. The Stooges apart (and they were a different kettle of garage band entirely, in content as much as style), there simply hadn't been anything quite as confrontational, cocky and in-your-face as the New York Dolls before. From the classic Thunders/Johansen opener "Personality Crisis" onwards, the Dolls revealed themselves as the new rock outsiders. The album's pungent undertones of low-life street hassle and edgy drug deals and sharply observed narcissism set them apart. And every subsequent punk rock icon, from Joey Ramone to Johnny Rotten, took note.
