It is to the New York Dolls' credit that they have not yet been inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. For close on 30 years they have evaded a corporate pardon by the music industry. Unlike their eminent contemporaries, the MC5 and Iggy And The Stooges, they are unlikely to find forgiveness. Rock And Roll may have been reinvented as a corporate brand but the New York Dolls have avoided the overly conspicuous taint of the barcode. With marketing men running around buying up the last ciphers of rebellion, how and why have the Dolls managed to remain free? What keeps the Dolls just out of reach of the cool-hungry brigade is their blatant irreverence. It may be all over for the New York Dolls but their fabulous salutation to the rock and roll Bacchanal remains a potent reminder of the way they were. Young, insatiable and irredeemable.
