MASS ROMANTIC
Mass Romantic is the classic 2000 debut that introduced the music world to legendary übergroup, The New Pornographers. Together, Blaine Thurier ("Low Self-Esteem Girl"), Carl Newman (Zumpano, Superconductor), Dan Bejar (Destroyer), John Collins (The Evaporators, Thee Goblins), and Kurt Dahle (Limblifter), along with Neko Case on selected lead and accompaniment, produced an epic, baroque masterpiece of such hyperbolic grandeur that if it were a painting, one would not be able to stop studying it lest a vital detail be overlooked. One of the catchiest, most joyous records of recent years, the 12-song set is highlighted by such power-pop gems as “Letter From An Occupant” and “Slow Descent Into Alcoholism.”
ELECTRIC VERSION
2003's Electric Version is the second full-length album from revered supergroup the New Pornographers, featuring Carl Newman (Zumpano), Neko Case, Dan Bejar (Destroyer), and other local luminaries who play a joyful cascade of slightly jaundiced power pop songs that will knock your socks off. Yet the songs on Twin Cinema veer more toward the rocking and the personal than the sugar of the earlier work. Chief singer/songwriter A.C. Newman has absorbed not just the mechanics of classic songwriting - but the heart, while indulging his admiration of demented current bands like Fiery Furnaces and Frog Eyes. Twin Cinema served as a more mature outing than its predecessors, but still remains an enormously fun record through and through.
CHALLENGERS
Challengers, The New Pornographers fourth album, is airier, more spacious, and more relaxed than its jackhammer predecessors. In general, Carl Newman's songwriting is slightly more scrutable this time around; his lyrics still ring with wry perception and political metaphor, but they betray some of the magnanimity that comes with new love. The sophisticated, rich production values and complex range of songwriting allow us to extend the group's audience to new groups: AAA radio listeners, fans of Neko Case's solo work, and coffee drinkers in general. At the same time, the overflow of glorious pop hooks and stompers like "Heaven & Earth" and "Mutiny" kept the existing fanbase right in the groove.
BRILL BRUISERS
Brill Bruisers is the first new release in four years from the acclaimed supergroup The New Pornographers, who NPR calls “virtually peerless in the world of power-pop and indie-rock.” Massively melodic, Brill Bruisers is joyous pop music helmed by the soaring vocals of Neko Case, Dan Bejar (Destroyer) and Newman himself.
