It's 1993 and things are changing. Not least for British rockers New Model Army. Prior to The Love of Hopeless Causes the Bradford, West Yorkshire outfit had been putting out music rooted in a folk traditions, albeit still very much plugged-in, electrified and amplified. All that, and more, changed with this 1993 LP, their first after being freed - or freeing themselves - from EMI, and the only long form outing from the troupe to land on the Epic label. In the end, it's more of a stepping stone - musically and in terms of ethos. After this, they'd create their own Attack Attack Records platform for future releases, and double down on a much heavier rock sound. Given all that, The Love is a moment of evolution caught on tape, a loud and proud statement of independence which remains rousing to this day.
