Bemerkungen / Comments:

After one of the finest progressive rock masterpieces 'Remember The Future' (released on vinyl on Sireena Records SIR 4015), the guys from Nektar had to decide the direction of their next project. Should they continue with the theme record and the longer tracks or attempt something different? Nektar went with the alternate route and along with 'Sounds Like This' (on Vinyl SIR 4003) comes their most underrated achievement.

1974's 'Down To Earth' with Hawkwind friend Robert Calvert acting as ringmaster for the progressive circus is a tremendous listen. 'Astral Man' is in its proper place as the album opens. Offering the perfect combination of catchy instrumentation with a great vocal, the three-minute tune would be superlative on stage as well. 'That's Life' is a work of art. The beauty of the song comes alive each listen. 'Fidgety Queen' is in your face Nektar rock and roll with no apologies needed. 'Oh Willy' can be thought of as a shorter version of 'A Day In The Life Of A Preacher' from 'Sounds Like This.' In short form it still takes hold of your body. The album builds momentum and by the time the eighth track rolls around 'Show Me To Way' you are elevated to an even higher level of musical brilliance.

The album is yet another juwel in the long series of great NEKTAR albums. Of particular note ist the backing vocals of famous P.P. Arnold and the saxophone play of Steve Gregory and rest of the brass. Sireena will continue the release of NEKTAR vinyl. Stay tuned!

Diese fünfte Studioplatte von Nektar kam 1974 raus. Nach dem Überflieger 'Remember The Future' überlegte die Band, wie es weitergehen sollte. Nektar entschied sich für ein weiteres Konzeptalbum. Der Zirkus steht im Mittelpunkt des Geschehens. Die Band steht, in Clownskostüme gekleidet, vor einem roten Doppeldeckerbus der in einer surrealen Landschaft parkt. Ein verspieltes Konzeptalbum.

Gleich der Opener 'Astral Man' verblüfft durch das ungewöhnlich flotte Tempo, Albrighton und Co. rocken sich in die Herzen der Fans 'Early Morning Clown' sowie 'Little Boy' sind ruhige Titel, die den Hörer gefangen nehmen und wegtragen. Die progressiven Wurzeln der Band kommen bei 'Fidgety Queen' und 'Oh Willy' zum Tragen, zwei tolle Progsongs. Die Höhepunkte bilden 'That´s Life' sowie 'Show Me The Way', zwei Kracher in bester NEKTAR -Tradition! Irre groovig und toll instrumentiert!. Zwischen den Songs sind wie in einer echten Zirkusvorstellung Ansagen eingeflochten, um eine passende Zirkusatmosphäre zu erzeugen. Diesen Job übernimmt übrigens der HAWKWIND-Kollege Bob Calvert. Überhaupt befinden sich einige hochinteressante Gäste auf dem Album, darunter die höchst ehrenwerte Sängerin P.P.Arnold und der bekannte britische Saxophonist Steve Gregory.

Fazit: 'Down To Earth' ist eines der abwechselungsreichsten NEKTAR -Alben. Die Songs sind sehr unterschiedlich, hervorragend arrangiert und von hohem Unterhaltungswert. Für die Soundqualität ist wie auf allen Alben der Briten Peter Hauke zuständig. Auch der langjährige Grafiker der Band, Helmut Wenske, zeichnet wieder für die Optik des Covers verantwortlich. Für die Zirkusphotos machte man damals den Zirkus Krone in seinem Winterquartier unsicher. Ein tolles Album!
