NEIL YOUNG "Tonight's The Night" 1975 UK 1st PRESSING OUTER TEXTURED G/F w/INNER & INSERT, TOP COPY, EX+
NEIL YOUNG
Tonight's The Night
ORIGINAL UK REPRISE (K 54040) FIRST PRESSING (June 1975) OF THE NEIL YOUNG'S STUNNING "Tonight's The Night" LP - RECORDED IN 1973 BUT HATED SO MUCH BY HIS RECORD COMPANY, REPRISE THAT IT'S RELEASE WAS DELAYED FOR OVER TWO YEARS - IT'S SUBSEQUENTLY BECOME ONE OF NEIL YOUNG'S MOST CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED WORKS
AND THIS COPY IS NOT ONLY IN BARELY PLAYED CONDITION BUT IT'S *COMPLETE* WITH THE ORIGINAL INSERT (see details below)
Dark, heartfelt, and raw, Tonight's the Night is a startlingly direct expression of grief.
Crazy Horse guitarist Danny Whitten and Young's friend and roadie Bruce Berry had both died of drug overdoses in the months before the songs were written. The title track mentions Bruce Berry by name, while Whitten's guitar and vocal work highlight "Come on Baby Let's Go Downtown", recorded live in 1970
PRESSED WITH THE FIRST ISSUE REPRISE LABELS WHICH CARRY THE "Made In UK" TEXT but no WB LOGO (all Reprise labels from mid-1975 onwards carry the WB logo on the bottom rim text so only the very earliest releases of this LP have no WB logo)
MATRIX NUMBERS: K 54040 A2 (etched "HELLO WATERFACE") / K 54040 B2 (etched "GOODBYE WATERFACE")
THE ALBUM IS HOUSED IN THE ORIGINAL OUTER TEXTURED MATT GATEFOLD SLEEVE PRINTED BY "Shorewood Packaging Co. Ltd., England"
COMPLETE WITH THE THICK CARD INNER SLEEVE (which has a smooth silky finish)
AND THE ORIGINAL INSERT WITH "K54040 P 1975 WARNER BROS. RECORDS, PRINTED IN UK" CREDIT
Included with the vinyl release of Tonight's the Night was a seemingly strange insert that added to Neil Young's claim that Tonight's the Night was the closest he ever came to art. Emphasising the personal nature of the album, the self-penned liner notes contained an apology: "I'm sorry. You don't know these people. This means nothing to you."
The insert has a printed letter to the mysterious "Waterface" character, no explanation is given to their identity, although in Shakey: Neil Young's Biography by Jimmy McDonough, Young says that "Waterface is the person writing the letter. When I read the letter, I'm Waterface. It's just a stupid thing—a suicide note without the suicide."
Other text is equally puzzling, as it appeared in the insert superimposed over the credits to Young's On the Beach album, released a year prior. This passage is reportedly the lyrics to an unreleased song titled "Florida", referred to in Shakey as "A cockamamie spoken-word dream, set to the shrieking accompaniment of either Young or (Ben) Keith drawing a wet finger around the rim of a glass."
When unfolded, and comprising a whole side is a lengthy article printed entirely in Dutch and is in fact a review of a Tonight's the Night live show by Dutch journalist Constant Meijers for the Dutch rock-magazine "Muziekkrant Oor". In 1976 Young said he chose to print it "Because I didn't understand any of it myself, and when someone is so sickened and screwed up as I was then, everything's in Dutch anyway."
Track Listing:
Side 1: Tonight's The Night / Speakin' Out / World On A String / Borrowed Tune / Come On Baby Lets Go Downtown / Mellow My Mind
Side 2: Roll Another Number / Albuquerque / New Mama / Lookout Joe / Tired Eyes / Tonight's The Night Part II
LABELS: The labels are clean, bright and unmarked with no real evident spindle traces and the spindle hole is still very tight indicating how little (if at all) this copy has been on a turntable
VINYL Visual: The vinyl surfaces still retain their original deep, glossy sheen with just a few light marks - but these have no real audio consequence - the records sounds superb
VINYL Audio: Superb audio - crisp, sharp and fresh and it sounds absolutely sensational. This is an exceptional piece of work - emotionally raw and profoundly felt - and on playback at a loud volume (which is how I always listen to my LPs prior to listing and it's always an immense pleasure to return to this one) there are no scratches, no sticks or jumps, no real surface noise and barely any clicks or pops (this was never one of the cleanest pressed LPs - and the few very light 'ticks' which are present here and non-intrusive and I did play-grade this wonderful LP at a very loud volume). The whole album plays to a very high standard with all frequencies bright and clear, no groove-wear and no distortion and is critically graded EXCELLENT+ for audio - this is tremendous piece of work, a great copy and very, very highly recommended indeed and in all honesty I really don't think you'll find one which sounds much better than this
SLEEVE: The original outer textured gatefold is good and solid with crisp, sharp edges (with just a little storage rubbing) and a clean, clear spine with all text fully legible - EXCELLENT+
INNER SLEEVE: The original card inner is in EXCELLENT+ condition with no marks, few signs of handling and no splits to the edges - rare for this inner. (The LP is now housed - and will be posted in - a new inner to prevent any 'knifing' damage to the original during transit)
INSERT: The insert, folded in 4 to create a small booklet is also EXCELLENT+ with just one very light creases otherwise, perfect - clean and unmarked
