Long May You Run is an album credited to the Stills-Young Band, a collaboration between Stephen Stills and Neil Young, released in 1976 on Reprise Records, catalogue K54081 in the UK.
It peaked at #26 on the Billboard 200 and certified gold in the U.S. by the RIAA. The album is the sole studio release by Stills and Young in tandem.
Musically, it follows mostly in a similar vein to the duo's other joint work with Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, traversing various facets of Americana and folk music, while songs such as "Make Love To You" have something of a jazz feel, and the extensive use of synthesised strings on the second side give the songs an art rock sound.
Following the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young stadium tour of 1974, an attempt by the quartet to finalize a new album ended amidst acrimony without result. David Crosby and Graham Nash resumed their partnership as Crosby & Nash, while Stills and Young continued their independent careers.
Songs from the aborted CSNY album appeared on various albums by group members, and Stills covered two Young songs on his contemporary studio albums: "New Mama" on Stills and "The Loner" on Illegal Stills.
In early 1976, Stills and Young reached a rapprochement, and began to work on a joint album project from a desire by both to pick up where they left off with their Buffalo Springfield-era guitar explorations, a decade after the inception of the band.
Crosby and Nash signed on as well, and briefly Long May You Run looked to be the awaited CSNY reunion album.
However, on a deadline Nash and Crosby left Miami to finish the sessions for what would become their 1976 album Whistling Down the Wire, and Young and Stills reacted by removing the duo's vocals and other contributions from the master tapes. Crosby and Nash vowed never to work with either again, although less than a year later they would regroup with Stills for a new CSN album in 1977. The original mix for the song "Long May You Run" with vocals by Crosby and Nash restored was included on Young's Decade compilation in 1977.
The Stills-Young Band, comprising Stills' current touring band behind the pair, began a tour in 1976 prior to the album's release. The tour commenced in Clarkston, Michigan on June 23, but after nine dates Young dropped out after July 18 via a laconic telegram to Stills, forcing Stills to complete the concert tour solo through October. The telegram read: "Dear Stephen, funny how some things that start spontaneously end that way. Eat a peach. Neil."
The album's advance single, "Long May You Run", peaked at #71 on the UK singles chart. The song was an elegy for Neil Young's first car (which he nicknamed "Mort"), a 1948 Buick Roadmaster hearse that died in 1965 when its transmission blew in Blind River, Ontario. Mort was a different vehicle to the 1953 Pontiac hearse, nicknamed Mort 2, that Richie Furay, traveling with Stills, saw Young driving in a Hollywood traffic jam in 1966 that led to the formation of Buffalo Springfield. "Long May You Run" was performed by Young on the final broadcast of The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien on January 22, 2010, and during the closing ceremonies for the Vancouver Olympics on February 28, 2010.

The Vinyl
On initial visual inspection the vinyllooks like a new vinyl in my opinion. Amazingly, I struggle see more than a handfull of spider marks on the labels! This lays perfectly flat on the turntable and are free from any warping. (Note! I have double checked these) The vinyl looks superb, still retaining its original glossy sheen from new. Only In strong light could possibly any or very (very) few surface marks be seen caused by the vinyl been slid in and out of its sleeve. Note: (no) deep needle scratches that would cause any loud constant clicks or pops at all!
The Audio Quality
I have played the vinyl prior to listing on a top system at very loud volume! The audio is superbe cristal clear and very vibrant throughout! Top audio seperation on all frequencies only heard like this on early original pressings! Note! Please allow for the odd isolated static/crackle or type pop perhapes heard in run ins or quieter place only. This looks and plays like a new vinyl in my opinion, there were no loud constant clicks/ticks, pops or any jumps truly awesome and very rare for a 1st pressing. The audio is graded at very Near as Mint in my opinion!
PLEASE NOTE! I always add this disclaimer! I have played this album prior to listing as usual and have given my honest opinion on the audio quality. Please remember this is a 40 years old original vinyl (not a reissue) Please allow for the odd interference/static pop/crackle/tick but importantly nothing consistant through out the audio! Please remember that this would have been originally played on a system that is 40 years old!
All indications i.e. that this vinyl has (not) been overplayed and in fact looks barely ever played in my personal opinion, at least no more than a minimal amount of times in my opinion and the audio quality superbe on all frequencies and the fact there are no spider marks on the labels that I can see!
The labels
This features the "Reprise" yellow labels. (only 1st UK press) These are superbe barely a handful of spider marks seen (even when angled to the light) and little if (no) spindle ware! This vinyl has hardly been played at all, at least barely a minimal amount of times in my personal opinion! You can still even see the plastic in the spindle hole!
The Record Sleeve
This is the original inner lyric record sleeve. Correct for this issue features correct catalogue number K54081. stunning condition! The edges are becoming fragile with age and very slightly beginning to wear. Slight creasings with age and a library sticker on one side to mention. The vinyl is now always stored seperately from the sleeve.
The cover
The original 1st issue un-laminated custom Embossed front only cover is superbe! Printed by Gothic Printers with (no) edge splits or tears. No real rubbing wear very slight fading to mention at the spine end only which is common on these 1st issues. The spine is awesome and generally square and the writing can clearly be seen! Note! A truly superbe example! No real nasty creases bare minor crease lines/one thumb crease on the front only, not noticed unless looked for in my opinion. worth to mention. Any other imperfections or indents are very minor and are not really noticed unless looked for in my opinion. The rear is near as perfect in my opinion. Must be at least Excellent to Excellent plus in my opinion rarely ever seen like this after 40 years!
