Label, Format and Condition: Reprise – Deep tan format with no Warner logo. Four beautifully intense coloured early examples that show a mere one or two (if that) spindle traces. Minimal handling and incredibly clean and unaged all suggests hardly even played (Please see my label scan).

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Weight of these Records: 130 / 121 grams. Both in the average range.

Rarity: Scarce: this double set sold very poorly, probably due to the severely harsh reviews it received when issued. Not only that, finding copies of this in anything like decent conditions is very difficult. With its idiosyncratic cover design, this is often seen in very poor conditions – most rife with rubbing, severe ringwear and major damage due to it’s delicate, flimsy construction and lack of bottom – yes true – this is one of the few covers I can think of where there is no means of holding the contents inside.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Young’s ‘one star wonder’: this album even today never gets favourable reviews - but why? I would never state this is his best album, but it truly does not deserve its status as a one-star throwaway disaster. I can only imagine the fact it contained nothing really new when issued and at a time when he was on a massive high of creativity and popularity. It’s a soundtrack too, possibly not to be classified as a proper ‘new’ album. Please ignore the critics on this one, Journey Through the Past is a vitally important album in the great man’s catalogue. It’s a documentary style issue, it has extended versions of some of his great songs including ‘Words’ and a stunning version of the classic ‘Southern Man’ and includes some vintage live material by The Buffalo Springfield, his former band. One track no-one will ever mention is the rousing instrumental on side four ‘The King of Kings Theme’ which I really love. It has an infectious stomping melody that really gets lodged into the subconscious. The cover is sinister and quite chilling with the Klu Klux Klan riders sillouetted with their crosses – a reference to ‘Southern Man’. The actual design of this cover has to be put into question more than the contents. For those not familiar it has to be explained. It’s a gatefold format with two inner opening flaps that are bottomless - yes this has no method of holding the LPs and inners inside, they simply can, and do fall out of this bottomless cover - it has to be uniquely idiosyncratic (and potentially disastrous, how many of these records will have hit the floor?) A notoriously difficult album to find in good conditions, the cover especially prone to all forms of wear and damage and this shows amongst the least I have yet seen. Both inners and records are immaculate visually and clearly lightly handled or played. This Neil Young album is now very much in demand, probably due to the fact it has never been issued on CD – and quite honestly, it’s very unlikely ever now to do so. Along with Time Fades Away, this pair are still exclusive to vinyl (and possibly vintage cassette tapes). If you see this album on offer on CD it will be a bootleg probably recorded on poor equipment from a worn record. Real fans of Neil Young know the importance and significance of this album, it appears seldomly and if you need a copy that plays very well (and not all do believe me), this is it. I have heard several copies of this title now and it seems a notorious ‘crackler’, even from copies that appear little played. The year of issue may give clues – 1972 – the year of the oil crisis where records were often pressed thinner and quality was more ‘variable’, often recycled vinyl (labels and all) were used. This copy gives a very fine performance and will not be easy to find much better. If, like so many, myself very much included, who ignored this one for far too long, it demands to be heard. Forget the critics, this elusive double set is essential.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High+ and prone to just about ever form of wear. A strong contender for the craziest design ever? Even when closed, it has no bottom secure edge to hold the records inside.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: and arguably better considering all the facts on it’s construction. A gatefold format with middle opening flaps that have no bottoms. Unlaminated with a very flat matt finish making it very susceptible to rubbing and ring wear in particular. It was printed and made by MacNeill Press Ltd, London. One of the most bizarre designs ever surely?

Cover Front: Even with a very small top right corner tip crease and odd minor fine mark, this is one of the best fronts I have seen on this cover that is notoriously prone to ring wear. Any trace on this front is ultra faint and the lack of rubbing, ageing and grubbiness all good news. Two or three light surface creases and the odd minor edge rub, but this will not prove easy to find much better. Even the spine fold has avoided rubbing and no sticker marks either.

Cover Back: Ruthlessly revealing and totally uncompromising. Double sets are notrious for ring wear with no laminate protection and this dark cover never holds back. Given the facts the ring wear and rubbing on this back are very modest and I have yet to find an example with none. Again a little tip creasing but this will also prove hard to better significantly. The small white area near the top right is NOT a chip or rub, but the moon.

Cover Gatefold: When opened fully, the white back shows no toning and is still very clean indeed. The printed ‘flaps’ are also very clean with no rubbing or wear. Both of the cut-out areas that fill with the album title via the inners are c crisp and as made. A little tip creasing again, but little else.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both are closed and unworn with neat attractive finish. A little minor compression being critical. These are white with no text and still very clean indeed.

Top & Bottom Edges: Four edges in fact, all single thickness and both top and bottom are open, these are totally uncloseable making the onus on the owner to be very careful with storage and handling as the free-floating inners and records will simply fall out if not gripped tightly enough – crazy but true. These show a little thickening with the odd minor burr trace, and again will not prove too easy to find much neater – the bottom ones especially as they support the weight of this set.

Spine and Text: Thick but flimsy and highly prone to crushing, bending and creasing. This one has retained fine shape with little of the aforementioned perils. Only slight compression hints near the top and the rest uncrushed and largely erect with any tilt slight. Faint rub traces on the back fold and barely any at all on the front – this a bonus. ALL text is perfect and unworn and the surface itself has little wear at all.

Corners: Such covers will rarely escape some tip rubbing or creasing. These show little rubbing and only small tip creases to two or three. Fine to very fine shape is retained.

Cover Summary: Scarce, complete and looking strong overall, a very fine example of this slightly ill-conceived cover. Many, if not most collectors will enjoy it but not for the perfectionist who will have to wait for the near impossible to show up.

The Inner Sleeves: Both little short of MINT as made: unlined, unsplit or torn (with no repairs) – I can imagine a fair number of these hitting the floor over the years and why wouldn’t they? Both ultra clean and uncreased with four immaculate faces. Both have avoided ringwear too, a trait always associated with these especially when the records are kept inside all these years, often compressed together just to keep them from falling out. These inners have clearly never been dropped and both are practically as good as they ever get and look immaculate.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(-): four ultra clean playing surfaces with just a mere tiny few hairlines when viewed real close under bright angled light (but look hard). Unlined inners are never records best friends hence I always provide brand new lined inners with ALL my records. Clearly hardly played and sounding impresisve given the slightly unpredictable trait of this set. Both will prove immensely difficult to ever find better.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Both records play very well with little unwanted at all. Many have constant and considerable crackle even from records that appear almost as new – this I know, because I have heard them. An album with some quiet passages, even devoid of music with just spoken word, so silence will prove a near impossible ask. This offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear. Devoid of pops or any significent clicks and all sound is focused with no groove damage or degrading – as you would expect from two hardly played records. The production of the Buffalo Springfield tracks is a little low-fi, but the main songs have super sound quality and superb thereafter. It will be quickly apparent to any winning bidder that this pair have hardly been played. This copy gives a splendid account of itself and will prove difficult to find much better. I enjoyed this pair immensely – one star indeed!!!!

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
