Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with any spindle marks few, light and faint. A gentle friction round trace around the hole rim area.

Weight of this Record: 147 grams. This heavy for this album, made in the year of the great oil crisis where many records were pressed thinnly or mixed with recycled vinyl.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: A fairly easy one to find, but again, finding early made, complete copies in better conditions is never so easy. Most are found as later, thinner pressings with the later format covers and missing their inserts, this is a clean complete copy that mostly offers clean sound and way heavier pressed than average. A little surface sound in places and never easy to find one that doesn’t as this was not the greatest era for vinyl record pressing quality. But if originals are wanted, that is often the case.

Brief Artist & Album Info: A massively popular Neil Young album, a chart topper in the UK and US and one of his finest ever recordings. An album of achingly beautiful songs, Young must have known he was on to a winner before he even recorded it. At times sounding old before his time, it’s hard to imagine he was only 24 when he recorded this true masterpiece. It even included a hit single in ‘Heart of Gold’, these were indeed very successful times for this great artist, but things changed quickly after the dizzy heights of this glorious album. Beautifully recorded and produced (pressing quality often variable however) this early copy is complete and mostly offers fine sound. It includes the darker earlier cover that has a more textured feel. Also a folded lyric insert and a heavish, plain biscuit colour inner (unlined) that has flipbacked construction. Later made covers were paler and more smooth finished and the inner sleeve changed to a plain white one. This record is often a notorious ‘crackler’ and this one has a little in places but most plays with very fine sound. So not for the perfectionist, but still a nice example many will enjoy. An album that can correctly be labelled as a ‘Classic’ with no hesitation whatsoever, a man inspired and the music sounds just as wonderful today as it did over 40 years ago.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: an unlaminated gatefold format with a very flat-matt finish and a quite textured, rough feel and finish – the inside is smooth. This the more robust, thicker and heavier original. Made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse. Includes inner sleeve and lyric insert.

Cover Front: This has around moderate darkening around the edges which the early versions of this cover seldom seen to avoid. So a little aged, but not in an unpleasant way. Little else to fault with barely any creasing or marks. These are typically darker than the later ones and this has a gentle rough feel to the fingertip.

Cover Back: The back is very dark indeed and has barely any real wear bar a little corner tip rubbing. The lack of creasing, rubbing and especially ring wear are considerable bonuses and this looks really impressive.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The inside is superb and has little to fault at all.

Top Edges: Some patchy rubbing, mainly on the back fold, both edges remain straight.

Bottom Edges: Moderate and slightly patchy rubbing on the back edge, any rubbing on the pale front registers less.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with little wear, odd minor burr trace or two seen viewed end-on but unfeathered or trimmed. Record entered on the back edge.

Spine and Text: A strong spine, this thicker than later ones. Solid and straight, uncompressed and folded square, the edges meeting up perfectly flush and parallel. All text is perfect and unworn which is less common on these more ‘rustic’ finished covers, the surface, like the edges, has darkened.

Corners: The corners have rubbed, most on the right ones that are moderate. Fine to very fine shape is largely retained.

Cover Summary: A strong and still attractive example, one that could prove difficult to find much better. Even though this album sold well, few of the early covers survive with such little overall wear. A little age toning I think actually adds to it’s vintage and looks, a trait these rustic card finish covers often acquire over the years. This attractive item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): a plain biscuit (ochure) coloured finish with a sturdy flipback type construction but made with soft card that is prone to wooliness. Both inside and outside is lightly textured like the main cover with a rustic type finish. This has a tiny bottom edge neat split which I have neatly repaired and it hardly even registers, and stops any risk is it widening. The top opening is shaped and remains neat and crisp with minimal thickening. Importantly this shows hardly any tracea of any creasing or even ruffling and unusually, barely any trace of record impression which is pretty remarkable. It has only a hint of darkening, less than the main cover and is attractive with no stains or noteworthy marks. A simple, but in it’s own way, distinctive inner that will seldom be found much better. More often shredded, torn, or simply missing altogether.

The Lyric Insert: EXCELLENT(++): a single folded large format insert. Again in super condition, with no creasing and scant evidence of even being handled. Clean and attractive with minimal discolour and no marks or grubbiness. Edges and corners are sharp and neat with no splits or tears. Printed again by Garrod & Lofthouse in England.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: with any surface traces minimal and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. A very fine visual copy that’s very clean with fine shine, intense black and quite heavily pressed with an above average weight and thickness. A lovely early pressed copy that will be quite hard to find much better for looks, this probably undergraded being honest. A copy with very few plays on all the evidence, visually, one that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic record plays up to, and a good percentage even above it’s very fine visual grading with just a little sporadic surface sound in places. Mostly on the very difficult song ‘A Man Needs a Maid’, which so often is the case. I have heard this, and other Neil Young albums around this period that look great but disappoint with sometimes, heavy crackle and unwanted pressing noises and rasps. As stated further up, this was not a classic year for vinyl quality due to the shortage of oil at the time. But this copy does play well with no pressing sounds or distortion. All crisp and focused with any surface noise generally light and infrequent – just enough to remind it is a vintage vinyl record being played – also I remind, I play all my records on very sensitive equipment as listed further down. The odd sporadic click is also difficult to avoid totally as this is quite a delicate recording with some quiet songs and passages. So not a silent or perfect copy, but still very nice if a little surface sound is acceptable. Not for the highly discerning, but again, I feel many collectors will enjoy it.

End Piece: Following three other classics in his debut, Everybody Knows this is Nowhere and After the Goldrush, was it possible for Young to improve still further on this pair? Well the evidence is very much here, an emphatic yes. Backed by The Stray Gators and a host of wonderful backing vocalists as listed above. This is Young in a more mellow mood with fewer guitar solos, a beautiful timeless piece including some sublime orchestration. If any album demands to be included in any serious collection Harvest is one of them. It’s an album I like to play regularly and never, ever tire of it’s excellence and ability to move. If I had to wait for a pristine silent copy of this, I would probably never get to offer it at all, so a little surface sound I regard as almost the normal for ‘Harvest’. I consider this a more than worthy copy, but again, not for the audiophile purist who only wants perfection at any cost.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
