Label/Format: Reprise – early deep tan format as a second pressing with the new K 44088 number (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both in super condition: very clean, fresh and attractive with only very light, few and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area.

Cat Number: K 44088.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 135 grams. A very good weight for this pressing.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Scarcer as a first issue, but this first second pressing is little easier. This pressing from 1971 still includes both the deep punched RSLP matrixes along with the new Kinney ones. I have seldom seen a much lighter played early copy either especially with such a lovely little-worn cover and a splendid example of the insert sheet.

Brief Info: Neil Young’s third album and many regard it as his very best and for many years now it’s been regarded as a masterpiece. Issued in August 1970 and being this late in that year, it was never issued on the tri-coloured Reprise label. A wonderful set that blends rock with country, it introduces his fans to Nils Lofgren whose presence is strong. This is a very cohesive work and was a prolific time for a man who was also working with Dave Crosby, Steve Stills and Graham Nash. Over the years, this landmark album, that introduced him to a much wider audience, has lost none of its power and charm and is still highly sort-after. This has never been too easy to find in better conditions. Firstly, most of the originals were played to destruction. And also, the pressing quality was often variable as it was on several of Young’s early Reprise albums. Even ones that appear almost like new could, and often did crackle. occasionally with pressing sounds. This heavy-pressed second issue – still very early – is generally clean and certainly hardly played knowing well the collection it came from. Mostly it plays very well indeed with little unwanted, any surface sounds are minimal and light – a little mainly gentle and brief traces were heard on ‘Only Love Can Break Your Heart’ and very briefly on ‘Southern Man’, but compared to some Young album I have heard from this era, this is minimal and little of any note spoilt my pleasure listening to this remarkable album. I remind too, I play-grade everyone on a very revealing system. So overall, a very early second issue that is complete and played little. One that should please many collectors if not quite the most discerning who want absolute perfection at any cost.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: High: a cover I have seen more often than not worn and tatty, it seems quite intolerant of general wear.

Cover Grade and Format: MINT(-): an unlaminated gatefold format with a matt and smooth finish Just like the first pressing, printed and made in England by MacNeill. The only difference is the K number instead of RSLP and this is a beauty.

Cover Front: This has to be my best ‘Gold Rush’ cover ever. It came from the collection purchased several weeks ago of hardly played albums. There is not need for any lengthy description really, this front looks practically as made and finding this front better will prove near impossible, any blemishes are minuscule. Note that creepy small character passing the opposite way to Young.

Cover Back: Simply immaculate and one that reminds of new.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Again in superb condition with no wear or blemishing worthy of mention.

Top Edges: Thick, straight and unworn up to the ends that have tiny tip rubs.

Bottom Edges: As above, possibly even better which is remarkable for the traditional storage edges.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with little wear and both guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on the back edge, the front being sealed. Any thickening or burring to the back entrance is minimal and light and any traces only show viewed end-on.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight, uncompressed and folded square, the edges meet up quite closely and parallel. A slight tilt to right but barely any wear at all up to the very ends. All text is perfect and unworn and finding one better again will again prove hard.

Corners: Any tip rubs are tiny and all retain excellent or better shape. So rare on this cover as such.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this quite unforgiving early 70’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. This has heavy, top quality construction and is one to hold and enjoy – rather this than the usual significantly worn RSLP version that will probably command a vast price – as stated, the only difference is the K number. This beautiful item should please all collectors, they hardly get much better. A plain white unlined inner is included in excellent condition. This has ‘Patents Applied For’ text and is very modestly aged.

The Insert: EXCELLENT(++): a double folded lyric insert sheet printed on one side and guaranteed original. This also has the new ‘K’ number. Practically unworn or aged, all folds solid and unstressed with neat crisp edges.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): with any surface marks via usage tiny, few and very faint. There is a mark on side one in manufacture – a smallish dull mark – but has NO sound, merely a mild superficial blemish. On that basis I have not accounted for it in my visual grading as it was present from new. A very fine visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This landmark record within Young’s classic catalogue plays mostly up to, and the majority even above it attractive visual. As stated further up, a little gentle surface sound was noted on ‘Only Love…’ and brief traces on ‘Southern Man’, but little spoil my genuine pleasure play-grading this evergreen classic album. No pops or clicks were noted and audio quality is high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Deep in the bass frequencies, the early pressings have real depth and punch. I have heard several copies of this that have constant, often significant crackle or clipping to the vocals, a trait not so unusual on this title. This title seems highly intolerant of heavy stylus abuse and only the most cherished copies survive with better sound. Even into the new decade, such stereo records were still played on mono record players, most less than worthy to preserve those delicate grooves with vast tracking weights. The information often stripped and worn away rendering crackle, high frequency clipping and even distortion – this one has never been subjected to such traumas and it still sounds impressive with not a great deal to fault. This could prove difficult to find significantly better for looks and sound, so man are of these are seen trashed. I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record and most fans will enjoy it. Possibly short for the highly discerning or audiophile collectors, I am simply being cautious and honest. Neil Young remains an analogue connoisseur and he would approve of this one. This record could prove difficult to find significantly better and is merits strong consideration.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
