Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with any of the very few spindle marks being light and faint. Side one only has a couple and the record appears very little used. Another from the collection purchased new by one owner.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Rarity & Overview: First pressing as quite rare, and it always has been. The title itself is fairly easy to find as a tan K- prefix reissue, but that is very different to a first issue. The repressings were also remixed and put in the more common ‘named’ cover with the new Kinney number. Firstly, a poor selling record and many sources state it was not issued in the UK initially, but was delayed and appeared after the US release date. So the amount of time this title would have been available on either RSLP format – it was briefly issued on the tan format with the same catalgoue number when it was changed – would have been very limited. Only early copies of this record included the cover without his name appearing on the front, an unusual and bold thing to do on a ‘debut’ album, later pressings had his name included. Remember, Neil Young was a relative unknown at this time. A member of Buffalo Springfield but they had minimal sales in the UK and many would not even know who this man was. Another major factor about these early pressings, they were the only source to the original mix which Young himself was not satisfied with. Subsequent pressings had some songs remixed with his voice a little more prominent and clearer in the sound. Two tracks had additional guitar added as well. Many Young connoisseurs preferred this original mix, his slightly muted voice actually adds to the atmosphere and mystery of the songs. The remixed version is different, the original sound is the most cherished by his fans. A delicate album that many acclaim as one of his finest ever, it experiments by blending folk, rock with orchestral elements and it works brilliantly. This is really impressive example and has no pressing issues, it plays with lovely clean sound and the cover is simply sublime as-seen. I have had this album a few times, but none better than this. A delicate album and finding a ‘perfect’ one will never prove easy. This album was not issued in mono, so it was likely a high percentage were subjected to much harsher mono record-player treatment – and most collectors will know what that potentially means – the one owner of this copy only used stereo equipment, thus has survived without issues. The cover was protected in a plastic sleeve and the difference is immediately apparent, I have never seen a better one and it truly does come close to reminding of new, it’s a beautiful piece of rock art and could prove a huge upgrade for some. So a highly impressive all-round example and seldom seen as such.

Brief Info: After the breakup of Buffalo Springfield, Stephen Stills stayed with Atlantic records but Neil Young went his own way to pursue a solo career and signed for Frank Sinatra’s fledgling label Reprise. This debut album received mixed reviews at the time and sold poorly making the early ‘original’ pressings difficult to find. I have outlined the details of the production and it’s subsequent remixing above. The material is varied, ranging from rock to folk and unusually, the opener is an instrumental. The Young classic ‘The Loner’ follows and actually benefits from the low vocal mix. There is not a bad track throughout and time has acknowledged this album a ‘classic’. ‘The Old Laughing Lady’ has genuine eeriness and mystery, the death-like creepy backing vocals again work brilliantly on this original mix. This is one of the album’s most test songs. The vocals are intense and often break-up or clip with crackle even on modestly played copies if played on less worthy equipment from the past. Here focused and sharp and with no inherent pressing flaws from which some do suffer. ‘The Last Trip to Tulsa’ is Young’s first solo epic, a long finale with great lyrics and a distinct folk-rock sound, an astonishing piece that set out the pathway for future great songs and eventual popularity, although the journey at times became rocky. This is a rare record as a first UK pressing and this is possibly hard to imagine for a man who is now a household name, but this was the beginning of the road that made him a superstar. The actual time this was available in this format was only quite brief and few took any notice – a few copies also exist on the RSLP tan label which are equally elusive. Overall a very clean record with impressive sound and clearly played very few time. The famed and prized no-name cover is simply stunning and it will take something remarkable to better it. A real and rare opportunity to experience this vintage debut the way it was originally issued.

Cover Grade and Format: MINT(–): and actually looks even better. A single fully laminated format that was printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd. It was distributed by Pye Records. This is the very scarce original ‘No Name’ cover that was later replaced with his name printed on the front. It was made with very thin card, and original records were usually heavily pressed which means it seldom wears well. But this beauty was cover-protected and cherished by the one owner from new. The polylined inner sleeve is included.

Lamination – Front: A strikingly beautiful cover and this does it nigh-on maximum justice. It retains a rich intense colour as seen through very shiny, fresh and clear laminate, this one is totally unfaded or aged. Even viewed under light, it has minimal traces of dulling and only one small tiny lift on the front bottom right corner tip, this on the white border, so registering little. Just four light half moon laminate creases towards the right, three of which are very light indeed and little else to fault. It even lacks edge hairline creases, that something I have never seen before. When these are present, they tend to darken against the cover’s white border, to the lack of these makes a massive difference to the fresh, clean appearance of this amazing example. Also the white areas are still exactly that – white – not yellowed, toned or darkened, I have never seen this cover so fresh and clean. Clearly given the due care it merits, this cover, now over half-a-century old, is simply stunning.

Lamination – Back: If anything, even better, an astonishing sight with the white areas all nigh-on pristine and totally unaged or darkened. No even a trace of a lift or even rim impression – that remarkable with such a heavy record inside over 50 years. Any creasing or dulling bordering on minuscule, along with the beautiful front, both sides are in almost archive condition.

Top & Bottom Edge: Both thin, but virtually straight, perfectly smooth and with full laminate with no scuffs or chips at all up to the very corner tips.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean and mostly very sharp with any thickening tiny, very patchy and light, even viewed end-on. Guaranteed untrimmed, the laminate ends both sides are still quite wide to reiterate the fact. The white exposed cards on all laminate ends are incredibly clean and fresh as well. These area rarely escape often heavy grubbiness and toning, the cover-protection means this has been totally avoided, hence this has barely aged at all. The record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: A fantastic spine which is always incredibly thin but still perfectly solid and straight. This the reason why this area rarely will avoid some fine hair creases or light cracks, but as stated, this has hardly any, the front has indeed none. All laminate is fully intact and solid with all text pristine mint, also perfectly centred on the very narrow depth which makes this look even better as-seen.

Corners: The only tiny fine tip crease is on the front bottom right, that apart all almost as made with close to perfect shape retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A rare and spectacularly attractive cover. The ‘No Name’ original graphic is beautiful and the lack of identity gives it a real sense of mysteriousness. It’s flimsiness is a always a factor, but when cared for to this standard for over 50 years, it’s a thing of genuine beauty – and rarity – let’s be coy about it, few will even come close to matching this. It could prove the ultimate upgrade for some fans and collectors and it’s one I am proud of offer – and it will not be forgotten.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: or close to. A plain white, polylined inner with just one fine neat central edge split. I normally repair these if possible, but the lining makes this more difficult and thought best to leave as-is, most will store the record in my new supplied soft-lined inner anyway. The lining very clear as seen through two nigh-on perfect crisp window circles and any creasing little and light. . This is UK patented and has ‘Foreign Patents Pending’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): a very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and heavily pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface marks few, very light and quite faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, few register. The merest trace of inner sleeve dulling again with scrutiny under light, a common trait of records stored in polylined inners and left undisturbed for decades. Totally harmless, and in this case almost as light as it ever gets, it’s practically invisible in normal room conditions, but will try to mention all I see, however minimal and superficial. Visually a super record that should please many, and given rarity and age, possibly most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This unique first mix and pressed album plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*, or pressing rasps or distortions. Few available copies will outperform this significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, and even ‘The Old Laughing Lady’ plays superbly, that a very difficult song with those female backing vocals that often cause problems. An album with some quiet songs and some acoustic, so only lightly played and well-pressed copies really deliver what is wanted by collectors. I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been beautifully stored and mostly carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. A challenging record that will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. Again, the cover is probably one of the very best you will ever be offered, and that, an integral part of a first-issue copy.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
