Brief Info: Third album by Scottish rockers Nazareth. It attracted more attention of the record-buying public and was the first to chart. It included two hit singles in ‘Bad Bad Boy’ and ‘Broken Down Angel’. A band in demand, this is a very fine early-pressed copy on Mooncrest, it plays impressively throughout with a nice attractive cover.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: an unlaminated gatefold formatd, and somewhat prone to wear. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group with the original B&C distribution credits. Includes the plain white inner sleeve.

Cover Front & Back: Dark and wear-prone, both sides have little. Any rubbing very little and light, also hardly creased bar a small dink on the bottom left tip, some light edge and tip rubbing very hard to avoid totally. Minimal hint of any rim rubbing which is seldom avoided on the back especially. The back includes quite a rare shop sticker stating ‘INC. V.A.T.’. Value Added Tax was introduced in 1973, the year this album was released, I doubt if too many stickers will be seen for this then new tax. There are no price sticker removal issues and the lack of fading is another plus. So generally clean and attractive and not so easy to find as such.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Impressively clean and fresh with just a small tip rub on the bottom left. Also a small crease on the bottom of the fold from the corner dink mentioned already.

Top Edges: Both straight and flat with hardly any rubbing, the cover folded a little off-square, so the edges are no parallel.

Bottom Edges: A little patchy light rubbing, way less than usual on dark storage edges.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with minimal wear or thickening. Record enters on the back edge, all guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight, uncompressed with very little wear or rubbing. However, there is a small chip that has erased the first two letters of the title, all other text is perfect and unworn as-seen.

Corners: Light to moderate tip rubs with fine or better shape retained. a smallish dink on the bottom corner tip as stated.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this wear-prone 1970’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. This still attractive item that only gives modest clues of age, should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: the solid plain white unlined inner has little to fault bar moderate darkening of the paper, mostly on one edge. Very little creasing with all edges unsplit and no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): a very fine visual copy that is very clean with excellent shine and solidly pressed. Any surface marks are ultra fine, wispy and faint as seen critically under bright light, there are no penetrating stylus scratches. Viewed in average room light, little even registers. Sound quality is impressive throughout. One to please many collectors who simply want to treasure the analogue experience of this Nazareth classic.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This lovely, very early Mooncrest record plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed, overall, an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played only lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, over the years, Nazareth have grown on me more and more, especially the early titles. This copy could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
