Description

NATE MORGAN 'Journey Into Nigrita' LP Nimbus Records NS 3257
* * *   From the specialty, afro-conscious NIMBUS Records label, Nate Morgan's first recording as leader, Journey to Nigrita, spotlights several stylistic streams; modal, spiritual and outside, flowing through Morgan's fingers at the tender age of 20 years old. A prime peice of spiritually directed afro-centric free jazz with several high points that include great playing from Dadisa Komolafe on alto sax. Morgan's compositions "Mrafu", "Morning Prayer" and "He Left us A Song" all bear testament to his devout and deeply spiritual studies. The title track "Journey To Nigrita" is nothing short of a tour de force, linking the players, the movement and the conciousness into the larger musical vision. "Study in CT", dedicated to Cecil Taylor, closes the album with a pure jolt of free jazz. A classic of its time from the always struggling L.A. Free jazz community; Nigrita was influenced prominently by Pharaoh Sanders, Ornette Coleman, John and Alice Coltrane, as well as Roswell Rudd, Archie Shepp, John Tchicai and Marion Brown. While not necessarily piano players, these are the artists that moved and motivated Nate in his earliest days. He counts among his keyboard influences, Thelonius Monk and McCoy Tyner along with Taylor. Prior to this (beginning at age 16) Morgan had been a member of Horace Tapscott's Pan Afrikan People's Arkestra, sharing very close ties with fellow Arkestra mate Jesse Sharps.   PROFESSIONALLY CLEANED ON A VPI MACHINE   * * *   VINYL: NM (VERY CLEAN!!!
