Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only a tiny few very light, fine and faint spindle marks. This purchased new by one collector and appearing little played and cover protected.

Warps: Few vintage records are ever perfectly ‘flat’, so some slight or very gentle arm movement is normal. If any record I offer has more than that, I will mention it, and it can be assumed all I offer should track without issues, even on budget turntables.

Weight of this Record: 179 grams. A heavyweight Reprise pressing from this golden era, this even heavier than usual, few standard issue records hit these weights.

Rarity: Scarce – one the most elusive UK pressed Nancy albums, this failed to chart. Even harder to find in stereo, this being the era of the mono record. So-much-so, Reprise – founded by her father Frank – did not even make a dedicated stereo cover, instead a stereo sticker was put on the back to cover the RLP catalogue number, this still included as-seen.

Brief Info: The third Nancy Sinatra album and surprisingly, it failed to chart. Within popular music, one of the most iconic female faces of the 1960s and this famous cover encaptures her perfectly for the time, posing on a London bus. Produced by Lee Hazlewood who guests on the brilliant ‘Summer Wine’, and she sang with him for many famous songs of this period – he wrote four of the tracks on this set. One of her most famous and sort-after albums and in super condition. Both the massively pressed record and stickered cover are in lovely condition and sound quality is marvellous with great songs and brilliant arrangements. I have been a big fan of Nancy since childhood, my father played her music regularly. A wonderful copy for 1960s collectors and Nancy fans everywhere.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a single format with front lamination, this covers all the folds and end on the three rear flipbacks. The back is smooth and matt. Printed and made in England, uncredited. A dedicated mono cover with the RSLP sticker on the back. The Reprise inner sleeve is included.

Lamination & Front: The 1960s perfectly encaptured by an American in London. A superbly iconic front sleeve that time has largely overlooked. How this one failed to chart after two previously successful albums I am not sure. This front looks lovely with clear, shiny and fresh laminate that has minimal dulling and no lifting. Traces around the rim area from the massively pressed record under light is nigh-on unavoidable on a cover now into its 53rd year. Just a tiny few edge hairline creases and none whatsoever away from the side. This iconic picture of Nancy on a 6B London bus will prove difficult to find much better.

Cover Back: The back has gently aged with light discolouration, mostly near the left edge. The RSLP sticker present and never removed, this has darkened on its very edges and gently transparent to reveal the RLP prefix beneath. All three flipbacks are superb, being solid with clean burr-free ends. A small light crease on the bottom left corner with few others on the flipback laminate. An impressive back with the only the merest hint of age to complement the very impressive front.

Top Edge: No real wear, smoothly laminated and quite straight. All strong again for quite a thin edge.

Bottom Edge: As above with just a tiny scuff trace (this is truly minuscule).

Right Edge(s), and Type: Viewed end-on, a little mild thickening to the front edge which is trimmed a little proud of the back in manufacture, the back has little wear. Record enters on this edge, both guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Very solid, straight with any compression light, the ends are nipped in manufacture. All text perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate, the white card virtually unaged, the laminate still very smooth.

Corners: Any tip rubs or creases small and light, Excellent shape mostly retained with no heavy knocks.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this classic 1960’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: arguably better. One edge has a very neat central split – hardly a surprise with a record of this weight inside – this I repaired to stop it widening and it hardly registers. A Reprise graphic unlined inner made with very thin paper. Clean, fresh and attractive lacking the usual ring wear and one neat corner crease. These often deliberate to stop the record sliding out. Any other blemishes little, few and light. These are hard to find in this very fine and hardly aged condition.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT / EXCELLENT(+): a very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and very heavily pressed on exceptionally heavy, thick vinyl. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with just one mild surface mark on side one that shows – it does nothing. Any other surface traces few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, little even register. Visually a super, age-defying record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This lovely vintage stereo album plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few available copies will outperform this super-early B1/B1 stamper pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
