Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with hardly a trace of spindle marks.

Up and Down Movement: A gentle trace. Few vintage records will ever be perfectly flat, any issues with significant movement or tracking will be mentioned in detail if applicable.

Weight of this Record: 184 grams. Yes true, a staggering weight for a standard pressing, even by 1960s standards.

Brief Info: The fourth Nancy Sinatra album, and probably my favourite of her albums that now had a distinctly country sound. Within popular music, one of the most iconic female faces of the 1960s. Produced by Lee Hazlewood who guests on the brilliant ‘Jackson’ and ‘Oh Lonesome Me’, she sang with him for many famous songs of this period. One of her best albums and in superb condition, purchased from new by one very careful owner. Popular music albums of this vintage seldom surface this nice (or as heavily pressed at a staggering 184 grams).

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a single format with front lamination, this covers all the folds and ends on the three rear flipbacks. The back is smooth and matt, the stereo version still included a mono prefix cover. It was covered with a ‘RSLP stereo’ sticker, but that has gone, the gentle outline residue mark is clearly seen on this area. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse with ‘Patents pending’ text. The Reprise company inner sleeve is included.

Lamination & Front: Impressive with little wear, that with a massively pressed inside for around 52 years as well. The laminate retains fine shine and clarity with no lifting and very few creases. The lack of major rim impression or dulling around this area is almost remarkable with any traces seen under light only very mild.

Cover Back: The light sticker residue mark around the MONO RLP text is the only blemish of note. These stickers do show up and it could easily be replaced at some time. So the main back panel is almost as-made apart and the three flipbacks are solid with clean ends, no end burring and hardly creased at all (one light one on the top left). An impressive back to match the quality front.

Top Edge: Smoothly laminated, thin, but reasonably straight. No wear or scuffs at all.

Bottom Edge: Even better if anything.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Any thickening to the front edge is light, it is proud of the back by a couple of millimeters, so that is naturally protected and even sharper. That apart, superb again, the record enters on this edge, both guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Very solid, reasonably straight – a hint of neat end bowing only – with any compression light, the ends are lightly nipped in manufacture. All text perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate, the white card virtually unaged, the laminate still ultra smooth.

Corners: Barely any tip rubs, just a minuscule semi-crease on the top right tip end. Then crisp and neat with excellent shape retained.

Cover Summary: A lovely all-round example of this 1960’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find better. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): and actually looking better still, in terms of wear and ageing, hardly any. A Reprise graphic unlined inner made with very thin paper, and with such a heavyweight record inside, it had scant chance of avoid edge splitting. Well it had only one neat edge split which I have repaired to stop it widening in future, it hardly even registers. Clean, fresh and attractive lacking the usual ring wear and just one fold to a corner, these often deliberate to stop the record sliding out. These are hard to find in this clean and fresh condition, even the top recessed opening is crisp and sharp with tears or thickening.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): a really lovely visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and massively pressed on very thick heavy vinyl. A copy appearing little played on all the evidence with any surface marks very few and light as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, little register. Visually an impressive, age-defying record that should please many, and maybe even most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This heavyweight, ultimate first A1/B1 stamper record plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Few available copies will outperform this very first pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, the music and songs superb and beautifully arranged, heard here at their finest. I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been very carefully stored and handled within a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find better and merits strong recommendation.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
