ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This beautiful and quite rare LP – a still-sealed copy – from Deutsche Grammophon (419 241-1, German pressing, DDD stereo) features Anne-Sophie Mutter and Herbert von Karajan's remarkable 'live' performance of Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto in D Major Op. 35, recorded in concert at the Grosses Festspielhaus, Salzburg on 15 August 1988 with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra on resplendent form. This was one of those very special occasions when solist, conductor, orchestra, audience, and sound engineering all came together to produce a truly memorable recording – one imbued with a tremendous sense of occasion and brought off with a frisson and beauty that is quite breathtaking – indeed, for this listener, Mutter, von Karajan, and the VPO's rapt performance of the 2nd Movement Canzonetta is simply unsurpassed on record. There may be very slight blemishes elsewhere, owing to the pitfalls of live performance, but they are just so many spots on the sun – superb!
The direction of production for this extraordinary recording was Günther Breest, while the recording supervisor was Dr. Steven Paul and the balance engineer was Günter Hermanns. There are excellent liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket in German (by Hartmut Lück), English (by James A. Hepokoski), French (by André Lischke), and in Italian (by Giordano Montecchi).
Finally, the memorable cover photo was taken by Siegfried Lauterwasser, Überlingen.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the still-sealed jacket is near-MINT. Really, there are no flaws to speak of and the jacket appears virtually as new – overall, this rates as a lovely collector’s copy.
The condition of the LP itself is MINT. This is a still-sealed, unplayed, pristine copy – the ideal collector's copy.
