Artist: Mott the Hoople
Format: 1970 flyer for the band ‘Mott the Hoople’.
Production year: ultra rare and early flyer for this classic band as from 1970, and dated ‘29th September’ that year. The flyer has been issued by the ‘Friars Music Liberation’ and explains on the rear of the flyer the decisions that led to the shutting of the original ‘Friars Aylesbury’ location, with a relocation to the Wycombe Town Hall, this being the first gig to be advertised at the new event!
Wording on the rear of the flyer includes:
‘Wow smash 13th helicopter was the main telecloud and try as we thought could create a breakfast and watch the last moondrop wow I wish’.
‘Yes, in other words its another mad and hairy Friar’s event!! Man alive! We tried everything under the sun to reopen Friars Aylesbury but the final decision from the people that owned the joint came as ‘NO’ which was really sad. We will not forget. However, everything changes, and now Friars events could take place anytime anyplace anyhow so keep your ears to the ground. Yes, Friars lives…. with you. The first crazy event since our closure in this area will be at none other than Wycombe Town Hall on Tuesday September 29th…and what an event!’
Rarity: super rarity which was the property of Terence Dale Griffin (‘Buffin’), drummer and founding member of ‘Mott the Hoople’. The gig would have been planned to coincide with the bands second album issued on the Island label, ‘Mad Shadows’, also released September 1970. This is over three years prior to massive success, and a certain rock band called ‘Queen’ would tour with them as support!
Condition: considering that this double-sided flyer is now fifty-three years old, this is in superb condition! The band at this stage had limited success and the ‘Mad Shadows’ didn’t even reach the album ‘Top 40’, reaching number 48. The item is minimal if any creasing and looks flat and would look amazing framed! Mild age yellowing on what is thick parchment-style paper. Minimal wear to the edges and minor ink smudges, and minimal grubbiness means I have no hesitation in grading this super rare item as excellent 8/10 condition.
Dimensions: 29.5cm x 21cm estimated.
Provenance: purchased as 134 via auctioneers’ ‘Harper Field’ in October 2023, as part of a large consignment of property for sale and offered by Buffins family, who sadly passed away from Early-onset Alzheimer's disease in January 2016. Redacted COA will be provided to buyer as proof of authenticity.
