Inherited from a relative, along with other stuff I am currently selling. Very rare album from 1969 - rare progressive - and reputedly with only 300 made! Very first withdrawn release too - with +A/+B matrixes, fully textured labels, wrong tracks, and a completely different mix to the released version on all tracks! Wow! It is worth noting that whilst the cover is showing its age a bit - the record is lovely!
I researched this record and found some important information about it:-
"Earliest first pressing on the 1st pressing Island "i" pink textured label. Mispress identifiable by +A and +B matrix. Standard pressing is A//2 and B//1
Mispressing of Mott The Hoople’s self-titled debut album, mistakenly including the track “The Road to Birmingham” as well as alternate versions of other songs. Island Records mistakenly used the wrong stampers to press the earliest copies of Mott’s first album; these copies include “The Road To Birmingham” at the end of Side 1 and “Backsliding Fearlessly” as the first track on Side 2 (omitting ”Rock and Roll Queen.”) Additionally, there is an alternate mix of “Laugh At Me”, a different version of “Half Moon Bay,” an extended intro to “Rabbit Foot And Toby Time”, and an alternate “Wrath And Wroll” with with a few bars of “God Save The Queen” at the end. In addition to what's mentioned in the Notes section, EVERY song on this withdrawn version is a different mix compared to the official version. A total collector's dream. Road To Birmingham is an early stereo mix without overdubs that were added for Two Miles From Heaven LP".
So clearly a very rare and important record! Here are the gradings below:-
The record is very black and shiny indeed, with only 2 or 3 very light lines Even under light the record is jet black and there is little in the way of paper rubbing. Record plays well too - with just the some background crackle / surface noise in places. But as this album has been sitting in my relatives collection for many years, I suspect it could do with a clean (even though it isn't dirty and has been well stored). The labels look really nice too (see pics!), with no damage and only minor spindles! I will grade the record Very Good+. Cover is still solid and useable with some yellowing to the edges, a small mark in the top right, and clear tape to a couple of edges. See pictures if unsure. I'll grade only Good to be sure - though it is still solid and decent. That said the rare part of this album is the withdrawn record with the wrong mix, and I was told the cover could be easily upgraded. Very rare album to find now as a 1st release with wrong mixes / tracks etc....
