Well I don't think one of these will be poppping up again too soon, do you?
THE MOTHERS OF INVENTION: My Guitar/Dog Breath (1969 South African Reprise 45 R21.108)
Quite where the cultural overlap came with Frank Zappa's Mothers and South Africa in 1969 will be puzzling historians for centuries.
But here is the bizarre truth that it happened. Apartheid meets My Guitar (Wants To Kill Your Mother).
I have to keep checking this record to see if I've got it right.
Yep there it is on bag and label. "Manufactured & Distributed in Southern Africa by Teal Records...PO Box 4105 Johannesburg."
Apart from anything else this is a beautiful looking disc. It has the rarely seen lilac Reprise label and a wonderfully designed exclusive South African Reprise company sleeve. Together they look superb.
And what can we say about the record itself? Well it's hardly likely those interested in bidding here will be casual collectors. Just as it will be highly unlikely many Frank Zappa collectors will ever have seen one of these.
The Mothers were by no stretch of the imagination a hot, charting singles band and the few 45s they did release are always highly sought after. This one wasn't even released in the UK. Just a few specialist overseas markets...like South Africa apparently.
The vinyl is in truly excellent condition - glossy and bright with various minor hairlines but NO SCRATCHES. There is a short surface scuff line to "Dog Breath" but it does not register on the sound at all.
The labels are clean and without writing. The delicate company bag is likewise and compliments the disc perfectly.
This disc is a TREMENDOUS find for Zappa collectors the world over.
Nearly FORTY YEARS since it was shipped out of Jo'burg it is possibly even unique today. I mean, I'd have to check but I don't suspect this record made it to Number One in what was the world's most paranoid and repressive country.
But here it is.
