Description

THE COMPLETE COMMODORE JAZZ RECORDINGS, VOLUME 3, Mosaic MR20-134, 20 LP's with 48 page booklet. One of an edition limited to 2500.

Condition of records is M-, no scuffs, no scratches, no spindle marks, plays very clean & quiet. Box is intact, with a few slide marks on bottom, a little bit of wear on front image (see photo). Booklet in very nice shape.

Perhaps Mosaic's most ambitious project, this magnificent set is the third of three volumes documenting the complete jazz recordings of one of the first independent jazz labels. This volume begins in June 1945 and concludes in June 1957. Over the course of the 20 LP's are complete classic recording dates by George Zack, Jonah Jones, Wild Bill Davison (3 sessions), Eddie Edwards (2), George Brunies, Mel Powell (2), Bob Wilber, Ralph Sutton (4), Sidney Bechet, Johnny Wiggs, Willie "The Lion" Smith, Frank Wess (2), & Peck Kelley. Also included is the complete Town Hall concert of June 1945, featuring Red Norvo, Bill Coleman, Gene Krupa, Stuff Smith, Teddy Wilson, Don Byas, & Slam Stewart. Furthermore, ther are 14 tracks that were inadvertently left off of the previous two volumes, featuring Bud Freeman, Chu Berry, Bunk Johnson, & Billie Holiday. In addition to all the music originally released on 78, there is a tremendous amount of unreleased music - alternates takes as well as unissued titles. As we have come to expect from Mosaic, the booklet is loaded with full discographical details, vintage pictures, an interview with founder Milt Gabler, and a session-by-session commentary by Dan Morgenstern. This set was released on vinyl only.
