Columbia Masterworks MS 6733 pressed in:
USA date:

LP condition:
Vinyl: vg+ (some light unfeelable scuffs, mostly on side 2)
Cover: ex (in original shrink and in beautiful shape, only flaw is slight yellowing at the mouth where the shrink was opened, the Riley art looks fantastically preserved under the shrink) description:
Experimental classical, free jazz, indeterminacy and improvisation all meet on this wonderful lp, Bernstein's most avant garde recording by far. This is the rare original 2-eye stereo pressing, with a beautiful art cover by op-art painter Bridget Riley (and with the cover still under the original plastic, this is probably the least discolored, best condition example of this cover you'll find apart from a sealed copy). The excellent Feldman work was composed using a unique notation system on graph paper; the soloists are permitted to choose the octave of every note that they play, while the rest of the orchestra plays in each instrument's highest register. Ligeti's Atmospheres interweaves the various instrumental voices into a "dense sonorous texture"; it was used by Stanley Kubrick in 2001: A Space Odyssey. Austin's jazz-based Improvisations features Barre Phillips on bass, Don Ellis on trumpet, and Joe Cocuzzo on drums. Four Improvisations by the Orchestra was completely improvised by the New York Philharmonic for this recording, under Bernstein as "policeman"-conductor. Overall, highly recommended!

artist info from album notes etc.:
British painter Bridget Riley studied alongside Peter Blake and Frank Auerbach and was influenced by Georges Seurat, Victor Vasarely, hieroglyphics, futurism, Giacomo Balla, Philip Taaffe, and Ross Bleckner. Morton Feldman studied under Wallingford Riegger and Stefan Wolpe and was influenced by Scriabin, Ligeti, Cornelius Cardew, and Mauricio Kagel; he became a key member of the New York School of experimental American composers (John Cage, Earle Brown, David Tudor, Christian Wolff), was one of the first composers to use graphic notation, a technique influenced by his many close friends in the visual arts (such as Mark Rothko, Philip Guston, Franz Kline, Jackson Pollock, Robert Rauschenberg), and he also pioneered the use of indeterminacy in his scores. Ligeti is a Hungarian composer who studied under Ferenc Farkas and Sandor Veress and explored methods of micropolyphony/tone-clustering as well as early electronic music; he was influenced by Zoltan Kodaly and Bela Bartok, and was peers with John Cage, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Henri Pousseur, Pierre Boulez, Olivier Messiaen, Mauricio Kagel, and Iannis Xenakis. Barre Phillips has worked in free jazz ensembles with Bertram Turetzky, Archie Shepp, Marion Brown, John Surman, Derek Bailey, Evan Parker, Joe Maneri, Peter Brotzmann, and John Coltrane. Larry Austin studied under Darius Milhaud and Andrew Imbrie, worked with John Chowning, Barry Vercoe, Salvatore Martirano, John Cage, Lukas Foss, David Tudor, and Karlheinz Stockhausen, and edited the well-known journal of experimental music, Source. This lp should be of interest to collectors of the Broken Music catalog of artists record works.
