Oxford University Experimental Theatre Club and Oxford Theatre Group – present Seven-a-Side, 1965 LP MJP Recording & Transcription Service BEV LP 162.
This is a nice example of the scarce LP Seven-a-Side by performers of the Oxford University Experimental Theatre Club and the Oxford Theatre Group. It is a 'private pressing' made / produced / released by the MJB Recording & Transcription Service label in January 1965 – BEV LP 162/3. The record is in EX condition. Typical of this sort of recording – I doubt that it was played more than a handful of times. It has a ‘duty paid’ stamp on the side-two label that I think indicates that only a certain number were pressed. However many exactly I do not know – but they were probably purchased by (or give to) the performers and their mates.The non-laminated cover just grades as EX, with just a couple of small brown ‘age spots’ on the front. It is surprisingly clean and white as I know that it was stored in an attic for many years and some of the other LPs in the ‘pile’ were a bit browned with age and the top one was quite grubby. Luckily, this one was nicely protected by others. There is no splitting or even rubbing / feathering to the edges / spine.
The performances on the LP – seven songs on each side – were recorded in Oxford in November 1964. Their ‘history’, credits, and context are described in the notes on the back of the cover. The performers include Michael Palin, Nigel Rees, and David Wood, with accompaniment directed by John Gould. Terry Jones has a writing credit for two of the songs, although he does not perform on the record.
The only other example of this LP that I can find (on a couple of web-sites) sold in 2011 for just over £100. The seller made a very good point that there were only a few copies pressed (probably under a hundred – most of which are now lost / forgotten and will never see the light of day) and it is a real piece of history. Certainly Monty Python ‘history’! And as this one is in better condition I am listing it at the same price as that previous example.
