Description
As Nat Hentoff says in the first notes to the earliest album ("Today!" - 1966): "I don't know of a more singular rediscovery in the current blues renaissance then Mississippi John Hurt. It is possible to categorize roughly most bluesmen - by regional style and sometimes by focus of thematic content. John Hurt, however, resists compartmentalization. For one example, Hurt is not a raw, harsh chronicler of the human condition in the manner of many Mississippi-shaped blues storytellers. There is an uncommon gentleness in his work. Often, in fact, sweetness would be the word, providing one remembers the possibility that a man can be a man without having to prove his virility constantly by "toughness" of stance and texture." You won't find copies of these records in any better condition- I would rate them pristine near mint. I don't represent them as first pressings though. The record labels are all the later of the two Vanguard styles. Original release years 1966 (Today!) 1967 (The Immortal MJH) 1972 (Last Sessions).
