Minor Threat - Out of Step 12" test press (Dischord Records, catalog # 10, 1983)

If this is not a holy grail of hardcore punk, I don't know what is. You are looking at one of the test pressings for the first pressing (i.e. the one that comes in the black black sleeve) of Minor Threat's first 12". To answer the biggest question first, no, this does not have the special silkscreened sleeve that only came with 25 or maybe 35 of them (but I also don't expect to get the $1300 that one last sold for!) It is estimated that somewhere between 50-75 total were made, so most did not have that sleeve, but even if 100 were made, this is still more rare than a Gary Cousins sleeve.

Many of these test pressings were sent to radio stations, and this is no exception. WDFM was the station for Penn State. Until the early 80s, it was a typical college radio station, playing punk and other non-mainstream music. Sometime shortly after this record was received by the station, the school decided to change the format to an NPR station, and the former staff was told they could take home any records that wanted, since they wouldn't be needed anymore. I purchased this record from the very smart DJ who picked it out. (And please see my other auctions for the Scream LP test pressing from the same source.)

Pictured below, top to bottom:

  1. The outer sleeve is a generic white cardboard sleeve with cutout. I'm not sure if this came with the record originally or was added by the station. There is a piece of yellow tape on the spine. The sticker at top-left which says "MINO 3/8/83" was definitely added by the station, as was the "wdfm 3-8-83" writing at right. The words at bottom -- "Minor Threat" and "Out of Step" in red -- could have been done by the label or station. The back of the sleeve is blank.

  2. Next we have the original innersleeve with pasted-on flyer-sized sheet showing roughly what the cover art was going to look like. A Discord stamping in green with label address is at top-right. The glue has discolored at both sides. There also some additional staining in the middle where some ink from the labels has bled through.

  3. Next we see the A-side of the record. Discord had pasted on mockups of the labels to the test pressing, but the A-side label has fallen off and I placed it on top of the record at top-right. Someone has written "wdfm" on the label in black marker. Note the NRP (Nashville Record Pressing) test press label, with hand-written 14410 (the NRP matrix number for this release). There are glue stains left on the labels.

  4. Finally we have the B-side of the record. This label is still partially attached. Someone has written "3-8-83" in marker. It is blank underneath with the same glue stains seen elsewhere.

Condition: [VG]/NM-. Please see all the details above concerning the sleeve. The vinyl is in surprisingly great shape for a radio station record. Please note: I use Goldmine standard grading, which has no EX grade.

On Feb-07-06 at 08:54:21 PST, seller added the following information:

A few people have confirmed that the special silkscreened sleeve only came with the test press of 2nd pressing, so it is in no way missing from this auction. The 1st press test press never had a sleeve other than what you see here.

It should also be noted that the 1st press of Out of Step has a different sound mix from any other vinyl pressing or the discography CD. Apparently the masters were lost and the album had to be re-mixed for the 2nd pressing.

I will not be ending this auction early at any price. Good luck!
