Description
- Artist & Title: Miles Davis - 'Round About Midnight
- Label & Cat #: 1957 Columbia – CL 949 *Original mono pressing on the deep groove 6-eye label. Label variation: album title and artist name each written on 2 lines (4 lines total) above the spindle hole and the small Columbia "eye" symbol is to the bottom-right of the circled "LP" at bottom of labels.
- Vinyl Grade: Very Good Plus (VG+) play graded *very impressive play for this 65 year old recording. There are several superficial spindle marks on both sides and Side 2 has an odd surface blemish on Track 1, but there was so little noise interference during play that I could grade record as Excellent, most definitely for sound quality. Balancing the visual blemishes and the few revolutions of extraneous background noise with the outstanding playback, I am grading as a conservative Very Good Plus (VG+).
- Cover Grade: Very Good Plus (VG+) *very nice jacket with minimal light shelf wear - owner's name written top center front, corner ding lower lh , which also has some wear on spine, top rh had open seam which was nicely repaired
- Notes: 'Round About Midnight was Miles Davis' debut Columbia recording. It was also the recording debut of an exciting new band that had within its ranks Philly Joe Jones (drums), Paul Chambers (bass), pianist Red Garland, and an all but unknown tenor sax player named John Coltrane. Musically, this sound is as unusual and as beautiful as it was when issued in 1956. There's little else to say except that 'Round About Midnight is among the most essential of Davis' Columbia recordings. The LP is widely recognized by jazz critics as a landmark album in hard bop and one of the greatest jazz albums of all time. (AllMusic)

GRADING STANDARDS: (M) Mint: Record and cover appear absolutely perfect in every way. Grade is seldom used, even with sealed albums where the record itself can only be assumed to be mint.
(NM) Near Mint: Vinyl is shiny with no obvious signs of wear and plays perfectly with no audible imperfections. Cover is close to perfect with minor signs of wear or age just becoming evident.
(EX or VG++) Excellent /Very Good ++: Record or jacket has a minimum of audible or visual imperfections. Vinyl has been handled and played very carefully. Light paper scuffs and/or spindle marks may be visible with no appreciable lessening in sound quality. Covers show very minor signs of handling and wear.
(VG+) Very Good Plus: Record displays light scuffs, spindle marks or very light scratches that may create some noise disturbances, but don't affect one's overall listening experience. Jacket begins to show more prominent signs of storage wear and aging.
(VG) Very Good: Defects are more pronounced with visible signs of handling and playing. Surface noise is evident upon playing, especially during soft passages and a song's intro and fade, but will not overpower the music otherwise. Covers may be marred by writing, or have tape or stickers (or their residue) attached, although none of the flaws should be overwhelming.
(G) Good / (G+)Good Plus: Vinyl will have scratches and visible groove wear. Record plays without skipping, although noticeable surface noise or ticks will be heard. Jackets have even more pronounced defects such as seam splits, tape, writing, ring wear, water damage or other defects.
