How does one describe the music on Bitches Brew? It's obviously jazz of some kind. It's not really fusion, not in the same way that something like Head Hunters or Thrust is. Compare the tracks on Bitches Brew with to "Watermelon Man" or "Butterfly" and the difference is immediately apparent. On those Herbie Hancock tracks the grooves and melodies are evident from the very beginning and they persist until the end of each song. Not so with anything Miles recorded for his double album. His tracks are constantly falling apart and coming back together. He often has different voices simultaneously going in different directions, creating all sorts of contrast and tension not found in Hancock's more standard fusion fare. The music compares a little more closely to the stuff Keith Jarrett was doing on albums like Fort Yawuh, but in Jarrett's tracks the focus is on individual musicians rather than the group, and he still falls into the head/solo constructs of small comb jazz. Although there are plenty of solo sections in Bitches Brew, the solos don't star so much as add to the general progression of the music.
Bitches Brew isn't a rock album. Somehow this record made the list of greatest rock albums of all time, and it doesn't really belong there. Yes, there are elements of late sixties/early seventies rock on it, and it definitely was influenced by rock and influenced the rock music that followed. There are a lot of electric guitar and keyboards on the album. Miles Davis was known to be a big fan of Jimi Hendrix, and Hendrix's influence can be easily heard on some of these tracks. Miles uses effects on his trumpet at times, for instance he adds a echo/delay to his part in "Bitches Brew". That doesn't make it a rock album, though.
