Mike Watt - Ring Spiel Tour ’95 VINYL Pearl Jam Eddie Vedder The record is still factory sealed and has never been played.
For nearly 40 years Mike Watt has been the champion flag bearer for DIY-rock & roll. No matter if it was with the Minutemen, fIREHOSE, more recently the Stooges, or his countless side projects Watt and his music, not to mention his bass playing, have influenced generations of punks.
In 1995, Watt released his solo debut ‘Ball-Hog or Tugboat?’ and the album featured a who’s who of 1990s rock & roll. Along with Watt (bass, lead vocals) the 17-track album featured Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters (drums, guitar); Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam (guitar, vocals); J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. (guitar, drums); Adam Horovitz of the Beastie Boys (drums, guitar, vocals); Krist Novoselic of Nirvana (organ); and Stephen Perkins of Jane’s Addiction (percussion, drums). Guitar contributions included Gary Lee Conner of Screaming Trees; Cris and Curt Kirkwood of Meat Puppets; Nels Cline of Wilco; Zander Schloss of Circle Jerks; John Strohm of Blake Babies; and Thurston Moore, Lee Ranaldo, Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth. Additional vocals were provided by Henry Rollins; Mark Lanegan of Screaming Trees; Dave Pirner of Soul Asylum; Kathleen Hanna of Bikini Kill; Anna Waronker, Petra Haden, Rachel Haden of That Dog; Frank Black of the Pixies; Carla Bozulich of the Geraldine Fibbers; and Evan Dando of Lemonheads, and many more. If that list doesn’t show respect for the legacy of Watt, I don’t know what does.
It’s no surprise that ‘Ball-Hog or Tugboat?’ went on to be one of Watt’s best-selling albums, but when it came for touring behind the treasured release, he had to scale back, way back from the roster of artist who appeared on the studio sessions. In true Watt fashion, the iconic bassist assembled an all-star backing band which included Vedder on guitar and vocals, Pat Smear on guitar, William Goldsmith on drums, and Dave Grohl alternating on guitar and drums – all of which were part of the two opening bands Hovercraft and Foo Fighters.
Available for the first time in any format, ‘Ring Spiel Tour ’95’ captures this legendary tour at The Metro in Chicago on May 6, 1995. The spirited 16-song set hosts eight songs off ‘Ball-Hog or Tugboat?’ and opens with the Daniel Johnson cover “Walking the Cow.” The set picks up with “Big Train,” which is a cover of Chip and Tony Kinman, who founded the iconic Texas band Rank and File, then Vedder comes out to join Watt on vocals for “Against the ’70s” and they do a rough version of the future Pearl Jam song “Habit.” Watt does dig deep into his back catalog breaking out the fIREHOSE songs “Formal “Introduction,” “Makin’ the Freeway,” and the set closes with “Powerful Hankerin,'” while only one Minutemen song makes the set list – “Political Song for Michael Jackson to Sing.” There are also a couple peculiar covers late in the set – “The Red and the Black (Blue Öyster Cult) and “Secret Garden” (Madonna)
Now that over two decades have passed, everything about Mike Watt’s ‘Ring Spiel Tour ’95’ is a historic bookmark in music history. Watt is a standup guy, one hell of a bass player and songwriter who has remained true to his roots from day one. Now that most of his backing band members have gone on to be huge rock stars, a tour like this would be nearly impossible. Luckily we have ‘Ring Spiel Tour ’95’ here to remind us what a great time the 90s were in music.
