Up for auction is the
5 Very cool Mickey Gilley Astro & Miscellaneous Texas soul Acetates.
I found these with quite a few other Houston area local and DJ labels. Apparently came from a recording studio, DJ or someone connected greatly to the Houston music scene. These acetates are primarily from Mickey Gilley Astro sessions. The others I have no clue, done a bit of research, but haven't been able to find anything. The discs play, but have definite flaws, pops, etc, but still very listenable. Acetates are not meant to play, but a few times and these reflect that. At the same time they are not trash and have an interesting glimpse into some early Mickey Gilley and some unknown Houston artists. Below I'll try and describe what is on each record. Record 1 - Side A - Mickey Gilley - Two takes of Lonely Wine and a take of Is It Wrong. There is also some cool rockabilly piano and a bit of Bo Diddley snippet. Side B - has a rough edge, and has two takes of Lonely Wine, and a short take of I Aint No Bo Diddley
Record 2 - Side A - Mickey Gilley - Takes of Susie Q and Down the Line Side B - starts with an unknown artist (vocals - nothing special) and then another take of Susie Q by Mickey.
Record 3 - Side A - Unknown R&B blues - great horn band, with a lyric repeated I know that anytime is the right time and To Be with the one you Love - cool track Side B - Bluesy with a lyric of "She wrote a note, now it's bye, bye baby, oh yes, she's gone" Not sure who but an interesting listen.
Record 4 - Disc is pretty rough - Side A is R&B with "I'm just Lookin" repeated with some high notes sung. Side B - R&B - Big Horn Band with He's Got The Soul and this group has girl back up singers.
Record 5 - Side A - Mickey Gilley again with a Susie Q take, then there are some soul singers, and alot of different outtakes by different singers. One of the singers is a Pop singer with lyrics of "Well you left me standing there all alone" Side B - is an organ instrumental possibly a band track.
There you have it - kind of a mystery, some very cool Mickey Gilley stuff and some interesting Houston soul R&B.
