Description
This is the prize item in my Michael Jackson collection, which I never wanted to part with but sadly circumstances are forcing me to. It is the 'Smile' 12” single, in excellent condition, with Charlie Chaplin picture sleeve, SIGNED by Michael Jackson himself.
The item was listed about a month ago but I withdrew it as a couple of interested persons had enquired about a Certificate of Authenticity, and I wasn't able to get this arranged in time before the auction ended. I've now had the item properly authenticated by a respected dealer (see www.thecollectorslot.com), and I also had a photograph of the signature examined by P.A.A.S. (see http://paasautographs.com) who gave it their best result for an online examination.
The record was signed by Michael in October 2005 when he was in London, staying at the Dorchester Hotel with his children. His spokeswoman Raymone Bain kindly collected some items from the fans outside the hotel, and took them to Michael's room to be signed. This is how the record found its way into the hands of the Great Man. He signed it 'Love, Michael Jackson' with his unmistakeable autograph. There is a very small smudge on the signature, presumably done by Michael, but which doesn't in any way detract.
As collectors of Michael's items will know, the 'Smile' record, in any of its formats, is just about the rarest item there is. I don't know whether this is the version from 1997 or the one that surfaced a few years later, but either way it is a beautiful and stunning item to own and I am selling it with the frame that I bought solely for displaying it. The frame is especially for 12” vinyl records, whereby the record and sleeve can easily be removed and put back in whenever required, so the buyer has the choice to immediately put it on display if he or she wishes. (As you can see from one of the photos, the black mount is placed over the record, which then slides into a transparent frame).
I'm afraid the starting price may seem high but even this does not reflect the value of the item (or what I acquired it for). I should imagine that there are very few – if any – other signed copies of this record out there, and if so then it is another question as to whether they will ever come up for sale. This is literally a once in a lifetime opportunity to own something like this.
