Michael Jackson (1958–2009) was an American singer, songwriter, and dancer, widely recognized as one of the most influential and successful entertainers in music history. Dubbed the “King of Pop,” he revolutionized the music industry with his innovative sound, groundbreaking music videos, and electrifying performances.
He began his career at age 6 as the lead singer of the Jackson 5, a Motown group formed with his brothers. Hits like "I Want You Back," "ABC," and "I'll Be There" showcased his precocious talent. By the late 1970s, Jackson launched a solo career that would eclipse even his early fame. His 1979 album Off the Wall fused pop, disco, and funk, and laid the groundwork for his superstardom.
In 1982, he released Thriller, the best-selling album of all time. With iconic tracks like "Billie Jean," "Beat It," and "Thriller," the album transformed pop music and pioneered the modern music video format. Jackson followed it with a string of chart-topping albums: Bad (1987), Dangerous (1991), and HIStory (1995), each showcasing his evolving artistry and addressing social themes.
Known for his distinctive voice, precise choreography (including the moonwalk), and visual innovation, Jackson was also a controversial figure in later years due to his personal life and legal issues. Despite this, his influence on music, dance, fashion, and global pop culture remains unmatched.
