Description
Metallica – Master of Puppets (1986, Elektra, Club Edition LP, US Pressing)
This is one of the most sought-after editions of Master of Puppets, Metallica’s iconic third album and one of the greatest heavy metal records ever made. Released in 1986, this US Club Edition pressing (Elektra – E1 60439 / 9 E1-60439) has a reputation among collectors as the version to own.
Many believe this pressing stands out because of its sound quality, with characteristics that make it a favorite over other US and international editions.
🔥 Why collectors love this pressing:
-
Exceptional clarity — vocals and instruments cut through with detail
-
Punchy energy and dynamics that bring the music alive
-
Brighter, sharper overall sound compared to EU/George Marino-mastered versions
-
Cleaner and more aggressive guitar tones
-
Unique mastering quirks (like longer pause on “Leper Messiah”) that add collector interest
-
Considered by many to be the closest representation of the album’s raw power on vinyl

📀 Condition (my honest grading):
-
Vinyl: VG+ — One light scratch on Side A (about 1.5 inches, hairline-like). Only visible under bright light at an angle — see photos, where I used strong lighting to capture it. Looks like it may have been caused by debris in the sleeve.
-
Jacket: VG — Shows typical ring wear, creases on the top and bottom right, and rounded corners. Still very presentable for its age.
-
Inner Sleeve: VG — Both seams have splits of about 5–6 inches each, right where the edge of the record rests.
🔎 Matrix / Runout (etched):
-
Side A: STE60439A-1A G1 A3 SL
-
Side B: STE60439B-1A G1 C2 SL
(Has the famous “SL” in the deadwax on both sides.)

This record was tested using a Parks Audio Waxwing phono preamp, which has a built-in grading system. As the record plays, the Waxwing listens for pops, clicks, or noise and gives it a grade (A, B, C, etc.) to show how clean the playback is. The important thing to know is the times only change when the grade changes. So if you see a time that’s shorter than the full song length, it just means the record stayed at the same grade for the rest of that track. The overall grade shown is the grade the song ended on after playing all the way through, giving you an accurate picture of how it sounds start to finish. I’ve also included an image that shows each song with its time stamps and overall grades, so you can see exactly how the record played during testing.

Please keep in mind, the Waxwing isn’t 100% perfect — sometimes heavy drum hits or louder passages can cause it to drop a grade even when the record still sounds good to the ear. I also personally listened to this record, and while there is some surface noise between tracks and at the start of a few songs, once the music is playing it still sounds very good and enjoyable. I’ve also included an image that shows each song with its time stamps and overall grades, so you can see exactly how the record played during testing.
On Sep-06-25 at 19:18:36 PDT, seller added the following information:I made a mistake when I uploaded the images of the waxwing grading. Battery and Master Of Puppets was swapped, my mistake Battery is only 5:10 long and Master Of Puppets is 8:38. Making Battery a B- and Master Of Puppets a B+. I have updated the correct image.
