Description
Heavier than Iron Maiden and more satanic than Slayer, it’s Mercyful Fate. The band had released its debut album, Melissa, in 1983. It was an album that took Black Sabbath’s dark occult obsessions to an extreme, fusing them with the speed and tightened, twin-guitar riffing attack of British metal bands like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. But the band had a distinctive sound of its own, thanks to the neo-classical flourishes of guitarists Hank Shermann and Michael Denner and the unpredictable vocal leaps of King Diamond, who could jump from a deep growl to an unearthly falsetto wail in the next line. “Live From The Depths Of Hell” was originally released back in 1984 as a gift at the fan club at the time. It consists of fourteen live cuts with a very good quality recorded in concert before the release of “Dont Break The Oath”. The material here are mostly from Melissa, Black Funeral 12″ and the self titled EP (more known as Nuns Have No Fun) but there are also two tracks; The Oath and Gypsy that would be on the coming “Dont Break The Oath” album. One of the tracks performed are “Into The Coven” which later would end up on the PMRC’s list of “The filthy fifteen” songs. Looking at the list today and seeing harmless acts like Prince, Judas Priest, Sheena Easton, Def Leppard, Cyndi Lauper, Madonna, Twisted Sister and Ac/dc on the same list makes you smile. Listening to “Into The Coven” and hearing King Diamond singing; “Suck the blood from this unholy knife, say after me; my soul Belong to Satan” and you feel that this is the real deal. On this show you will also here King reciting the Lords Prayer backwards. Yes back in the early and mid 80’s Mercyful Fate was the metal band that separated the men from the boys. Cool to finally see this since long out of print soundboard recording available again. Enjoy the vocal genius King Diamond live when he was backed up by the line-up of guitarists Hank Shermann and Michael Denner, drummer Kim Ruzz and bassist Timi Grabber.
