Description

"Meet the Fabulous Thunderbirds" VERY RARE 1965 NATIVE AMERICAN GARAGE AZ.

"MEET THE FABULOUS THUNDERBIRDS" IS A RAW AND DRIVING RECORD FROM 1965 BY FOUR HIGH SCHOOL KIDS FROM NEW MEXICO  - "Meet the Fabulous Thunderbirds", mono, on Red Feather #1.  These Thunderbirds are comprised of Ricky Abeita, lead guitar, vocal and band leader; Willam Carl Johnson - rhythm guitar and vocal; Mike Jiron, bass; and Herman Lucero, drums. All were between the ages of 15 and 17 when this album was cut. Here's what the liner notes say about them:

"HERE THEY ARE..the four American Indian boys who have combined their talents to form one of the country's most interesting and exciting rock 'n' roll groups..called THE THUNDERBIRDS.. Red Feather Records takes great pride in presenting this new and unusual group..We know you will enjoy this album and hope you agree that these..the first Americans..are well on their way to becoming first in American..in rock 'n' roll music."

The Thunderbirds were from the Isleta Pueblo village, 13 miles from Albuquerque. Their style falls square in the middle of 60's garage and punk rock. Their version of Route 66 isn't what you might think, shortly into the song it morphs into a Chuck Berry-styled rock 'n' roller. Berry was a big influence on them with a primitive version of Roll Over Beethoven and a Reelin 'n' Rockin, which is loosely based on the Berry original. "Hot Pastrami" actually starts out as Mashed Potatoes in a medium groove and then revs up into Hot Pastrami. Isleta is a cool instrumental. Let's Dance kicks off side 2 and rocks hard, every bit as good if not better than the original. Shedding Teardrops Over You has that swamp rock ballad style in the vein of Freddy Fender's Wasted Days. Just Let me Know is a New Orleans styled r&b rocker, influenced by songs like Fats Domino's Please Don't Leave Me. Fine album, fun album, extremely rare, a great addition to your collection.  The LP cover is between M-/VG+ Really Nice! The vinyl is between VG+/M- Has a scuff on one side that runs through 4-5 tracks. Does NOT affect play or sound. Starts at $169.00.

Over the years I have put together a massive record collection and will be listing and selling in the months to come. Also will be listing some great rock autographs. Please check back for more listings.
