This superb LP – a beautiful collector’s copy – from Supraphon (ALPV 70, Czech pressing, blue/silver label, mono, laminated flipback jacket) features Frantisek Maxian’s commanding account of Dvorak’s Piano Concerto in G minor Op. 33, accompanied by legendary conductor Vaclav Talich and the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, a recording made in the warm acoustics of the Rudolfinum Studio, Prague, in November 1951.

“These performances always have been famous and highly regarded, rightly so. František Maxián opts for the traditional Kurtz edition of the solo part in the Piano Concerto, a version happily on its way to being sidelined in favor of Dvorák's original, but he plays it very well, and of course Talich's accompaniment is marvelous.” [10/11/2005]

“The Piano Concerto is by no means as much of a dullard as received wisdom might have told you. It’s a work with some crusty drama in the manner of the Brahms First Piano Concerto. Maxian is completely at one with the towering heroic approach and is just as ready for the big bow-wow as for the consolatory and introspective colloquy. His decorated playing at the close of the first movement is a delight and made me think of Rubinstein in the Saint-Saens Second Piano Concerto (RCA-BMG). The Piano Concerto is heard here in the Vilém Kurz edition of 1919.”

There are brief liner notes (credited to Artia only) on the reverse side of the jacket – printed in English, German, and French. The lovely cover art reproduces a detail from Oskar Kokoschka’s “Charles Bridge in Prague”, while the album design was executed by Jiri Kubicek.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is near-MINT. Really, there are no flaws to speak of and the album appears as new. There are no seamsplits, bends, or owners' markings and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive in appearance – overall, an outstanding collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Though the surfaces are not perfectly silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT) this is a fine copy and playback is superb. If you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a NM collector's copy.
