“As I'm getting older, chip on my shoulder” is the opening line of MAC DEMARCO's second album, “Salad Days,” the follow-up to his critically acclaimed 2012 release “Mac DeMarco 2.” Between the familiar pining and the strumming guitar, this line sets the tone for the LP of a maturing singer/songwriter/producer. From someone who is clearly aware of the positive and negative aspects of his current situation at the ripe old age of...ahem...23. Written and recorded under the yoke of a relentless tour schedule (which then picked up significant momentum once the LP was completed), “Salad Days” offers the listener a personal glimpse into MAC DEMARCO’s life amid the madness of a rapidly accelerating public career.

The first single, “Passing Out Pieces,” accompanied by rich organ chords, includes lines like, “...never been reluctant to share, passing out pieces of me...” This is clearly a different record than the one that cheerfully served us tracks like “Dreamin” or “Ode To Viceroy,” but rather the result of the success of those songs. “Chamber Of Reflection,” with its jagged synths and soulful vocals, sounds as if SHUGGIE OTIS and PRINCE had collaborated. Highlights like this track show that MAC’s sound is branching out into new territory. Nevertheless, the whole thing sounds thoroughly like MAC DE MARCO—musically, lyrically, and melodically. It’s still that very same JOHN LENNON/PHIL SPECTOR-esque, lavish, DIY production that could have walked out of Geoff Emerick’s mixing booth in 1972, enriched with that special MAC touch that is entirely rooted in the here and now.
