This is a strange -- though in large part, successful -- album on a number of counts. Appearing after the release of the singles compilation Real Folk Blues, Brass and the Blues (also sometimes known as Muddy, Brass, and the Blues) was Chess Records' effort to give some fresh momentum to Muddy Waters' current recordings. It was only his third original LP following his tribute album to Big Bill Broonzy and the Folk Singer album -- like them, it was a concept album, but with a difference. Those earlier albums had been built around Waters simply returning to sounds and influences out of his past, but for Brass and the Blues the label tried to give him a new sound, somewhere close to that of B.B. King (who was selling a lot of records at the time). The presence of the brass and the prominent organ on some songs was manageable. Stripped of his guitar once again (the cover photo notwithstanding), Waters proved what a great R&B singer he was -- there are moments on this album where he almost crosses over into Otis Redding territory. Sammy Lawhorn and Pee Wee Madison's guitars come through the dubbed-on brass reasonably well, and this is more of a real "band" sound than was achieved on, say, Electric Mud, an even more extreme attempt at reshaping Waters' sound. The album was reasonably successful, though the reality in terms of Waters's sound and history is that, when this material has been compiled, the producers have often tried to use the undubbed versions without the brass.

Dismissed upon its release by blues purists as sacrilegious (for blending R&B elements such as brass with "pure" blues), and for covering other people's tunes (such as songs by Big Joe Turner, BB King, Charles Brown, Jimmy Reed and Chuck Willis), this 1966 Muddy Waters masterpiece not only aged with infinite grace, but gained much in stature over the past 57 years to become one of the best and most appreciated Muddy Waters albums, certainly much, much better than his electric and psychedelic efforts. This is only the second album Muddy released between 1960 and 1967.  (IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)         WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++, JUST A NOTCH BELOW NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions (probably just sleeve scuffs inflicted in storage over the years) ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)         The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)         Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                          THE COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-       Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2 (front side) and 4 (back side)

-       Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-       Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging (nothing significant)

-       Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-       Visible shelf wear noted on the top and bottom seams

-       Cover has one corner slightly worn (nothing significant)
