Kansas City songwriter Kevin Morby brings his eighth full-length into orbit with Aaron Dessner behind the desk, a pairing that loosens the frame without tidying anything up too much. The Midwest still hangs over it, not as nostalgia exactly but more like a set of sounds that won't leave - cicadas, passing trains, that long, flat stretch where everything feels a bit exposed. 'Badlands' opens with plenty of space around it, voice set forward, nothing rushing to fill the gaps. 'Die Young' and 'Javelin' keep things moving in a straight line, drums steady, guitar sitting just behind, while 'All Sinners' and 'Natural Disaster' thicken the air a touch. '100,000' and 'Little Wide Open' pull back again, smaller details coming into focus, and 'Cowtown' and 'Bible Belt' carry a bit more edge. By the time 'I Ride Passenger' rolls through to 'Field Guide For The Butterflies', it's still shifting but doesn't quite settle.
