MOON MULLINS – “STACK O’ LEE” (1952) RICH-R-TONE 1042 – ULTRA RARE

The very first and only known shellac release by Moon Mullins.

Original 1952 pressing on the Kentucky-based Rich-R-Tone label (Campbellsville, KY), featuring two extraordinarily rare recordings that survive only on this disc.

Only one other example has surfaced publicly in recent years, achieving $589 USD in a 2019 eBay sale (archived on Popsike).

RECORDINGS (DETAILED)

Side A – “Stack O’ Lee” (Traditional)
A haunting, stripped-down interpretation of the legendary ballad, delivered with raw, unfiltered intensity. The performance feels closer to a field recording than a polished studio production, carrying a dark, hypnotic atmosphere that draws the listener in. Primitive, direct, and authentic - a powerful snapshot of early regional sound.

Side B – “I’m Begging Back” (Moon Mullins original)

A emotionally charged performance, showcasing Mullins as both singer and songwriter. Delivered with a raw, unfiltered vocal, the recording carries a fragile, almost pleading atmosphere that feels remarkably real and intimate. An exceptionally rare document of Mullins’ own composition and the only known recording preserving his original work.

CONDITION (VJM): E-

Record plays great on both sides with strong, clear sound.
Surfaces are clean and glossy with no feelable scratches - only light signs of handling visible under light. Overall, a very well-preserved copy in superb shape for its age.

Labels show light wear, including minor marks and handling traces (see photos for full detail).
