6LP boxset edition. Includes CD versions of each album; Edition of 700. Emerging at the end of punk era, The Monochrome Set's estrangement from society came from a more arty angle. This boxset is the full account of their frantically productive early period, the perfect document of an under-appreciated chapter of British pop history. Though widely unknown, they are one of the most influential British bands of the last 40 years, with the early Morrissey and Marr, Blur's Graham Coxon, and Franz Ferdinand's Alex Kapranos among their admirers. Though Ganesh Seshadri, aka Bid, never went to college, The Monochrome Set are often seen as an archetypal art school band. In 1979 they released a string of snappy, now highly collectible singles on Rough Trade, followed by early masterpieces Strange Boutique (1980) and Love Zombies (1980). In 1982 they released their third LP Eligible Bachelors on Cherry Red Records. Their major label effort The Lost Weekend (1985) contained their biggest hit "Jacob's Ladder"."... the early Monochrome Set sound betrayed a fondness of Lou Reed and American psychedelia, and though they shared their generation's sense of estrangement, they certainly weren't part of the punk revolution. . . . [the Hornsey School of Art] was where lead guitarist Tom Hardy, later to be known as Lester Square, studied with a certain Stuart Goddard aka Adam Ant . . . The Monochrome Set's lack of breakthrough success is usually attributed to their inability to churn out the hits, but in hindsight their now highly collectible first four seven inches for the Rough Trade label, united here on one disc with all the singles from the early eighties period, prove that they started out as bona fide masters of pop's ultimate format. Released in February 1980, their first album Strange Boutique, featuring the band's percussion-heavy theme song and the Johnny Marr-anticipating 'Love Goes Down The Drain', caught the Monochrome Set in full flight, quickly followed by the equally taut, funny and adventurously dynamic Love Zombies. 1982 saw them move to Cherry Red Records on their third LP Eligible Bachelors, with the catchy lead single "The Jet Set Junta" promptly banned because of its non-existent connection to the Falklands War. . . . Shipping
Your item will be safely packaged in a bespoke vinyl mailer. We offer automatic postage discounts (where prices are applied) on multiple purchases. We dispatch Monday to Friday - orders placed by 12 noon will usually be dispatched the same day. Orders placed after 12 noon, or at the weekend, will be dispatched on the next working day.
Most vinyl items come from the manufacturer in a shrink wrap seal. We take immense care in the packing process to protect the seal from any stress. However, the seal is fragile and may, from time to time, become detached. We cannot accept any responsibility for this happening in the transportation process and nor can we accept returns on the basis of the seal breaking.
On rare occasions vinyl items are manufactured and shipped without a shrink wrap seal. In these circumstances we will place the item in a bespoke vinyl protector to reduce the risk of any damage to the product during packaging and transportation.

PRE-SALE ORDERS (where applicable):
IMPORTANT NOTE: Pre-sale orders are subject to manufacturers/distributors supply and how they determine to distribute this supply. Occasionally the record labels or distributors will have to cut orders if the supply from the manufacturer is outstripped by the demand for the product. This is completely outside of our control and may mean that we will also have to cut our orders. Should this occur you will be informed and refunded immediately. In such circumstances we will operate on a first come, first served basis; we will also cut any multiple orders to single orders in order to ensure, inasfar as we can that everyone gets at least one copy of the title. Occasionally there is a delay in the manufacturing process that may delay your delivery; if this should happen then we will endeavour to keep you fully informed of the progress of your item.
Our pre-sale listings use the marketing information and image packs supplied to us. At times the design of the packaging or colour of the vinyl, tracklisting etc may be amended by the record label after the marketing information has been sent out. We are often not informed of such amendments and, therefore, bear no responsibility and cannot offer a refund on the basis of such amendments.
Where the item listed is a Pre-Order, the release date is clearly stated within the eBay listing. In the case of a Pre-order, the delivery timescales and delivery dates calculated and shown on eBay, are not precise, and should be ignored. We use our best endeavours to get the item to you on, or shortly after, the release date, however, the speed of the Royal Mail is beyond our control.
Returns
We want you to be happy with your purchase. However, if it is not suitable for any reason, we are happy to refund your purchase providing it is:
- Returned within 14 days of receiving your order
- It is in original undamaged packaging with all tags intact
- The product is in the same condition as how you received it
- You have a statutory duty to take reasonable care of our goods whilst they are in your possession and during transit. We cannot accept liability for goods that get lost or damaged when they are returned, and request that you ask the Post Office to stamp the Proof of Posting label when returning products by post.
