 MOBY GRAPE S/T - TREMENDOUSLY RARE OUT OF PRINT AUDIOPHILE LIMITED EDITION WITH THE COVER WITH THAT FINGER FLIPPED - Even one of the most misguided marketing campaigns in history couldn’t obscure the sheer brilliance of this San Francisco-based quintet’s self-titled 1967 debut. Guitarist Skip Spence was the original Jefferson Airplane drummer, and lead guitarists Peter Lewis and Jerry Miller, bassist Bob Mosley, and drummer Don Stevenson were seasoned garage-band veterans. Everybody sang, everybody wrote songs, and their musical influences were quite diverse. The album, however, was a sold seller and remains the rock upon which the group’s reputation still exists. “Hey Grandma” and “Omaha” are two of the most profound singles to come out of San Francisco in 1967. If there is a theme to the album, it is live for the moment. The LP jacket is exact to the original with the old finger on the washboard with a poster also included.

Sundazed Music is proud to present a genuine psychedelic landmark: Live by Moby Grape, the first official collection of concert recordings by the legendary San Francisco band at its blazing late-Sixties peak. At that time, in rock's hippest city, there was not other band like the original Grape: Jerry Miller, Skip Spence, Bob Mosley, Peter Lewis and Don Stevenson. Their Columbia debut LP, Moby Grape, issued in June 1967, is still acclaimed as one of the greatest rock albums ever - a thrilling union of blues, soul, country, surf twang and da-glo garage rock, packed into original killer-pop songwriting. Even as extreme Columbia hype, devastating business hassles and Spence's tragic mental collapse threatened to blow up the band, the Grape continued to make immortal albums, including 1968's Wow and the magnificent Moby Grape '69.

But the records told only half of the tale. Moby Grape, in their prime, were also one of the Bay Area's - and America's - best stage band, like the Beatles and Rolling Stones in one, with a breathtaking triple-guitar attack and stunning vocal harmonies, Live is the long-awaited proof. It features more than an hour of dynamite performances from soundboard and broadcast tapes, including tracks from the Avalon Ballroom in 1967 and the band's complete long-lost set at the Monterey Pop Festival, just a week after Moby Grape came out. There are live versions of the great rare Grape songs 'Rounder" and "Looper" and five tracks from a famous Dutch radio show featuring the hard-charging '69 lineup of Miller, Mosley, Lewis and Stevenson.

And Live climaxes with the historic first-ever release of Spence's acid-guitar masterpiece "Dark Magic" - never recorded in the studio by the original band but presented here in an epic 17-minute performance at the Avalon, on New Year's Eve 1966. Moby Grape were the hottest band in town that night, with the whole rock & roll world ahead of them. And they sound like it.

These four-decade-old recordings have been spectacularly mastered, in you-are-there fidelity, and this album comes with sumptuous packaging and rare photos in true Sundazed style, plus liner notes by Rolling Stone writer and Moby Grape authority David Fricke. 'Live' presents, at last, the untold part of Moby Grape's incredible story. It is San Francisco psychedelia at its zenith and the best historical rock release of the year.

October 22nd, 1968 found Moby Grape on a bill with Procol Harum and the Churls in the gym at Stony Brook University, NY. They had recently become a quartet following the departure of troubled singer-guitarist Skip Spence, and this superb set captures them in transition from their psychedelic ballroom days to a mellower, country-based sound. It's presented here on 180 GRAM Vinyl with background notes and rare images.

LEGENDARY GRAPE - This is a the final Moby Grape reunion album which they released in cassette tape form only in 1990, under the name of the Melvilles. The Melvilles was as close as they could come to the Moby Grape name without being sued by Matthew Katz, their original manager, who still owns liscening rights to the Moby Grape name and much of their music. I was aware of the Melville tape but never could find it until it was released in 2003 on CD as "Legendary Grape". Mr. Katz should reliquish the rights to all things Moby Grape he owns. He has single handedly destroyed the legacy of a group, that deserves a whole lot more than Mr. Katz's ruthless exploitation of thier name and musical catalog.

I had some misgivings about buying "Legendary Grape" when it became available in LP form. Skip Spence didn't participate in this project, and for me, Skip was the keeper of the flame for this amazing band. I didn't want the final chapter of Moby Grape's history to be tainted by a lifeless and weary parody of their former glory. From the opening chords of "All My Life", a Skip Spencer song which he contributed despite his non participation, the reconstituted Grape plays with passion and power evoking the muscular guitar crossfire and delicate choir boy harmonies that was the signature sound of Moby Grape. Skip may have passed on this project but his fingerprints and DNA are all over it. The "Legendary Grape/Melvilles" project melts away the years to the heady days of San Francisco, 1967, when few bands wanted close a show with Moby Grape on the bill, because this band's volcanic charisma and take-no-prisoners approach to playing music, simply blew away every other band in their path.

Peter Lewis, Bob Mosely, Don Stevenson, Jerry Miller and even Skip Spence, despite his many demons, never gave up on the dream. Each member of Moby Grape never defined themselves as anything other than a working musician. This inspiring coda to the Moby Grape legacy deserves to be heard on it's own terms as a great rock and roll album. No matter who Matthew Katz and his lawyers sue, he cannot steal what was never his to take; the hearts and minds of Moby Grape and their fans; who will one day do justice to the Grape legacy. This is a great Moby Grape album and deserves to carry Moby Grape name.
