Label Condition: Very clean, fresh and attractive with any of the very small few spindle marks being ultra fine and faint. This rare UK-press mono record appears hardly played, reitterated by superb clean sound.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Rarity: UK copies of this album are rare, and such a clean mono example very rare indeed. Not only that, this one has the rare uncensored ‘finger’ cover. In many cases, this offending middle digit was airbrushed off as it was deemed offensive at the time. This album did not sell at all well in the UK and is seldom seen or offered and this is a beautiful record and cover unruined by time or the very basic record players of the era that destroyed many a classic back in the day. One of true West Coast psych classics and this is a top example.

Brief Artist & Album Info: This legendary, albeit short lived West Coast band, formed in 1966 in San Francisco, are famed for this issue. Released in 1967, the ‘Summer of Love’, Moby Grape, the self-titled album is regarded by many critics as the greatest debut album ever made and a bona fide masterpiece. For fans of the West Coast scene with special reference to The Jefferson Airplane, this album is indispensable. Sadly, this band were ill-fated from the outset, their record company unwisely decided to issue five singles all at the same time and this grandiose overhype helped lead to their downfall - they simply could not live up to this album again. In 1968 Spence was diagnosed schizophrenic and had a breakdown and after two more mixed albums Moby Grape fizzled out. All fine musicians, Spencer had the most charisma he radiated a special quality that seemed to lie behind his brilliant, offbeat compositions as well as his later disintegration - he returned in 1969 to issue another fragmented classic Oar. This famous album features a blend of styles including blues, country, soul, rock, jazz and psychedelia - little had been heard like this before on one record - a masterwork had been created. Controversy even boiled over on the cover, after printing and issue the record company belatedly noticed Stevenson was giving ‘the finger’, and this cover was reissued with the offending digit airbrushed out - it still did not please the company even then. This copy has the original artwork and the condition of the cover is very fine and the record superb. An album for the connoisseur 1960s collector, UK uncensored covers with a mono record that offers the best sound almost possible are very elusive and seldom seen. If, like most, you missed this groundbreaking issues back in the day here is a superb original copy, one that should please most. An album as important from those psych days as the better-known US classics from The Doors, Love, Jefferson Airplane, Hendrix et al. There can be no higher recommendation.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): and this hardly does it justice. A single format with a laminated front that has the original uncensored ‘finger’ cover as seen in close-up. The back is unprotected and very matt and smooth finished. This was a dedicated mono cover. Produced by the Upton Printing Group in the UK. Also includes the CBS promotional inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: This another one of the infamous and very collectable covers. This has the less shiny type of laminate which some covers had. A little fine lifting near the edges, but with far less visual impact being the less glossy type. Quite honestly, this front is little short of as made with little else to fault, it has no dulling as a result of friction or wear, this finish is simply natural with a different finish laminate. Just a tiny few super-fine spine edge hairline creases, the graphic looks superb – a strange colour affect on Jerry Miller’s face, possibly a blemish in the printing, being below laminate, it sure has nothing to do with any wear. This collectable and rare UK-made example front will be very difficult to match or find better.

Cover Back: The very wear-prone back shows some handling marks to the dull black finish. Few at the time would have thought not to handle a cover. These fingermarks only really seen under angled light, there is barely any of real wear at all, just a tiny scuff near the top edge and little else. The lack of creasing, rubbing and especially ringwear are huge plus-points, and like the front, this will prove difficult to find much better.

Top Edge: Mainly straight, but thin and unworn.

Bottom Edge: Largely the same, any thickening to the back panel end tiny and faint.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with with minimal hint of wear, any thickening or burring little and very light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight and very smooth to the touch with full laminate retention. Any compression minimal and all text perfect, centred a fraction low on quite a narrow depth.

Corners: Small tip rubs with very fine to excellent shape retained with no dinks or creasing.

Cover Summary: A very fine example of this rare UK-made ‘finger’ artwork cover. These are seldom seen or offered, especially with so little wear. One many, if not most collectors will be delighted to own.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: this the unlined CBS orange promotional inner. Only marked down for a rear crease and a little natural crinkle, also a tiny tear on the top edge, but look hard. Two immaculate window circles, barely any grubbiness and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): and this hardly does it full justice. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with fine shine and very solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface trace marks few and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. Minor dull traces seen in the pressing itself but this on affect on sound which is superb, this obviously nothing to do with wear. Visually a super vintage mono record that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This rare original mono record, one of the genuine almost ‘lost’ classics, plays even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a full dynamic range and detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing in terms of sound quality. No old chipped or worn mono stylus have ruined this classic disc, the sound is sharp, focused and devoid of noises or distortion, practically as made. Few available copies will match or outperform this very first UK issue I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp with no ‘mono’ noises from either channel when played on stereo equipment, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Such records were not really designed to be played on ultra revealing stereo equipment, but when this well preserved, they are a thing of genuine beauty and this gave of it maximum best and I can truly hardly imagine a better one. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, this is exceptional. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended – you want little short of perfect audio quality – you got it.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
