The Asylum Albums is the latest in a string of long-planned archival re-issues of Joni Mitchell's globally adored work. Together with her late-manager, Elliot Roberts, the pair announced in 2020 that fans would have an opportunity to get their hands on some of the Canadian folk, jazz, pop and rock doyen's previously unreleased stuff, while also revisiting seminal albums.

Each box set in the series follows a similar format, with original albums packaged together with brand new artwork by Mitchell, with a second musical outing for each era containing things most of us have never heard before. The Asylum Years comprises the first four albums she released for Asylum Records, and is therefore part one of the exploration of that period - widely considered a seminal era for her sound.
