Description

VINYL TEST PRESSING (mx. 401481-B) of Okeh 8654
MISSISSIPPI JOHN HURT: Stack O' Lee Blues

This is the real thing people! Rare and very desirable. This is a VINYL TEST PRESSING of one of only 12 John Hurt sides (6 records) released by Okeh. 401481 is the Okeh matrix number from the 1928 NY session; this is not a shellac disc from that era, probably a test for a later Okeh pressing? If anyone has a guess about the origin or vintage of this record please drop me a note. This disc is in excellent condition, E+ (most likely never been played) with one very faint scratch 1" and one ½" dull spot, (visible in picture below and right of the matrix number) perhaps some discoloration from moisture and contact with the sleeve. The grooves in this area appear undamaged.
PLEASE NOTE: This is a VINYL disc, defiantly not pressed in 1928. Vinyl was first introduced for special applications in the mid to late 1930's.
For reference, the discography listing pictured is from my copy of "Blues & Gospel Records 1902-1942" John Goodrich and Robert M.W. Dixon (Storyville, 1969)

The hand-written notation: matrix number and title (paper label on the the blank side of the record) is from the original collector, Jake Schneider.
Don't be scared by the opening bid.  Do a little research to find what original Okeh commercial releases of John Hurt discs have sold for recently.
Have a look at my other listings, I'm also selling another Mississippi John Hurt test, Okeh mx. 401474, Big Leg Blues; released only on vinyl in the late 60s, early 70s? Maybe someone can help me out with this.
