• This is the original 1970 soundtrack LP that remains hard to find and features a excellent track by Mick Jagger ("Memo To Turner") available nowhere else.

• Much-reviled upon its initial release, “Performance” later became a cult hit that continues to divide audiences to this day. Many fans find it to be an innovative, very progressive film from a master filmmaker, with good performances and a feel that hearkens back to a highly interesting time in British cinema. The music score is entertaining throughout assisted by bottleneck guitar from Ry Cooder who had a hand in '60s psychedelic records as a studio musician.

3. The 1970 film, "Performance", marked the directorial debut of cinematic craftsman, Nicolas Roeg, and it is, indeed, a memorable and eclectic first effort. Starting off as a splashy, violent gangster film, "Performance" then takes a sharp detour down the rabbit hole. James Fox plays the sinister, blandly handsome Chas, an impeccably dressed, hired goon who roughs up errant clients and collects overdue dosh as demanded by gang leader, Flowers (Johnny Shannon). Chas obviously takes enormous pleasure in his job, an enthusiasm that carries over into his personal life when he engages in some rigorous BDSM play with an adventurous woman he picks up: he's as ferocious in the boudoir as he is in the field, but when all is said and done, Chas emerges with a many war-wounds as his conquests. With a job he loves, the perception of power, and a sense of style reflected not just in his wardrobe--more Patrick Bateman than end-of-the-sixties Bohemian--but also in his posh, modern apartment, Chas should be on top of the world. But, as sometimes happens, Chas is having an identity crisis, which becomes a huge problem when he makes an unauthorized kill on one of the gang's clients (once his childhood friend). Suddenly, with both the gang and the cops looking for him, Chas goes on the lam with some ill-gotten gains he has stashed behind the tiles in his kitchen. Disguising his appearance with some metallic substance that looks suspiciously like red paint, Chas decides to lay low in the basement apartment of the ramshackle mansion owned by reclusive rock star, Turner (played by Mick Jagger), who is having an existential crisis of his own, and Turner's two scantily-clad companions (Anita Pallenberg and Michele Breton). However, the "laying low" takes on an entirely different meaning as Chas finds himself unwillingly pulled into the druggy, Bohemian squalor of this odd trio's world: it's a little like “Alice's Adventures In Wonderland” with Chas as Alice. Things get more surreal as someone's child wanders in and out, various drugs are consumed, sexual combinations abound and identities merge.
   
4. It's a grand old time, a gripping thriller and a mindfuck all in one.
   
   Looking very much like a young David Bowie, James Fox is perfectly cast as Chas. At once calm and collected, and yet explosive and dangerously intimidating, Fox brings a fearsome intensity to the role of a man who is no longer certain he's the man he claims to be. As his polar opposite, Turner would seem to be a cakewalk for Mick Jagger, but the rock star gives a performance of astonishing depth and complexity. His Turner, all bravado and world-weariness on the outside, is actually full of doubts and insecurities; he wants out of his own life but is powerless against the inertia that keeps him confined to his dreary house. Gorgeous Anita Pallenberg plays Pherber, Turner's main squeeze, with impish glee, while Michele Breton, who somewhat resembles Jagger, is the lovely whose favors are shared by the pair. The rest of the cast is uniformly good. As gay, well-mannered head bad guy, Flowers, Johnny Shannon is amusing and portly, and makes no attempt to hide his sexuality from his subordinates; in fact, in one funny scene where Johnny discusses the Chas situation with his hooligans, “body building” mags are randomly scattered throughout his bedroom while Johnny's boy toy, nude except for a towel, casually brushes his teeth with the bathroom door open (the entire film, really, is very gay-friendly, and surprisingly forward in its depiction of sexual fluidity). Allan Cuthbertson and Anthony Valentine also stand out as, respectively, a lawyer and Chas' ill-fated pal.
