When McCartney formed Wings back in 1971, it was intended to be a touring unit as much as a recording one. After spending the latter half of his time with the Beatles confined to the studio, McCartney was itching to get back onto the road. By the time September 1975 rolled around, the Wings' tour would last over a year and take the band around the world. The triple-album WINGS OVER AMERICA was recorded during this time and despite lots of material within, the performances within contained no filler and were bristling with energy from start to finish.

Wings' secret weapon was guitarist Jimmy McCulloch, an underrated guitarist from Stone The Crows whose playing lit up the opening medley of "Venus And Mars/Rock Show/Jet" and "Hi Hi Hi." Along with material from a mix of Wings albums, McCartney proudly revisited his past by dusting off latter-day Beatles songs which had previously been studio-only manifestations ("Lady Madonna," "Blackbird"). WINGS OVER AMERICA clearly showed that McCartney was the first Beatle to settle comfortably into touring regularly in addition to dealing well with his musical past.

Wings Over America, double live album reached #1 on the Billboard albums chart, chronicled the American portion of Macca and Wings' 1976 world tour. Paul had surprised fans by including Beatles songs among his live set for the first time since the fab four broke up six years earlier. Those performances of Beatles' songs, including 'Yesterday', 'Lady Madonna' and 'Long and Winding Road', are included here alongside great versions of Paul's solo gems and Wings favorites including the Top 10 version of 'Maybe I'm Amazed'. 28 tracks total including a cover version of Simon & Garfunkel's 'Richard Cory' and the Macca-penned 'Soily', neither of which are available anywhere else. EMI.

This original song running order is grouped with each individual album side highlighting McCartney on a particular instrument, and with the songs on that side generally sharing the same general "feel", or in the case of side 5, from the newest studio release before Wings Over America, Wings at the Speed of Sound. The episodic structure of a six-sided triple LP, and the ordering of more dramatic and dynamic songs to open (and end) an album side, can be more clearly seen when the running order is grouped by album sides.
