PLEASE READ BEFORE BIDDING: Please read the entire auction listing, including shipping costs, before writing to ask a question. OUR GOAL IS CUSTOMER SATISFACTION. In order to meet that goal, we will ALWAYS work with our customers on any concerns that may arise. In the unlikely instance that you feel the need to open a resolution dispute before working with us, you will immediately be blocked from any further chance to acquire the rare music we present each and every week. Payment is required within seven days. We mail all paid items ONE WEEK after auctions end. Please keep in mind our listings are time consuming in detail and we are often traveling to find these gems, which at times delays the delivery schedule by a day or two. We ALWAYS process and ship every paid order. We have no control over parcels once they are mailed from our local Post Office.Overseas mail to some countries (Italy, Russia, France, in particular) has become very slow. Opening a dispute for slow mail is unacceptable and will result in blocking the bidder. We work hard to provide excellent service as is represented by our 8000 plus positive feedback. We use a VPI machine and thoroughly clean all records. Each order is carefully packaged by removing the LP from the jacket to avoid seam splits, use of 3 ml plastic cover sleeves over each LP and jacket, cardboard pad inserts, and placed in sturdy record mailers for safe delivery. We take Customer Service seriously, and want you to be satisfied. A vintage collectible on the old silver/brown A&M label, recorded in 1970 -- this quintessential British folk-rock album is by a woefully underrated rock band in general terms. Their second release in less than a year, 1970's "Liege & Lief" proved to be the band's creative and commercial breakthrough. Whereas earlier efforts reflected a band struggling to meld rock structures and instrumentation with English folk music, here they finally found the recipe. Simply one of the year's most original and endearing releases, material such as Denny's rocking "Come all Ye", the plaintive "Reynardine" and "Matty Groves" made for a must-hear collection. A major seller in England, the collection generated little attention, and even fewer sales in the States. Unfortunately, success led to major creative disagreements within the band. Interested in pursuing their folk-rock leanings, Hutchings and Denny quit. Hutchings wasted no time forming Steeleye Span, while Denny reappeared with the short lived Fotheringay with Denny (see separate entries). (Hutchings was replaced by former Uglys bassist Dave Pegg.)
The late, great Sandy Denny with a voice so beautiful and distinctive. 'Liege and Lief' is basically an electrified bit of traditional folk heaven, with many of the songs dating from the 16th through the 18th centuries, with original compositions by guitarist exrtraordinaire Richard Thompson, bassist Ashley Hutchings, fiddler Dave Swarbick and Denny sounding in much the same vein as the traditional tunes; in fact, so well does the original material match the traditional, it can be quite hard to differentiate the two, which is a testament to the group's songwriting skills.Songs of particular interest are 'Reynardine' (an eerie song about a were-fox that draws a young woman to her doom), 'Farewell, Farewell' (a Thompson composition sung with appropriate melancholy by Denny) and 'Tam Lin' (another traditional tune which Fairport breathes life into). And the highlights are the violin-inflected jams on 'Matty Groves' (an old-style hack 'n' slash song of adultery) and 'Medley' (jig anyone?).
