Payment is required within seven days. We mail all paid items ONE WEEK after auctions end. Please keep in mind our listings are time consuming in detail and we are often traveling to find these gems, which at times delays the delivery schedule by a day or two. We ALWAYS process and ship every paid order. We have no control over parcels once they are mailed from our local Post Office. Overseas mail to some countries (Italy, Russia, France, in particular) has became very slow. Opening a dispute for slow mail is unacceptable and will result in blocking the bidder. We work hard to provide excellent service as is represented by our 8000 plus positive feedback. We use a VPI machine and thoroughly clean all records. Each order is carefully packaged by removing the LP from the jacket to avoid seam splits, use of 3 ml plastic cover sleeves over each LP and jacket, cardboard pad inserts, and placed in sturdy record mailers for safe delivery. We take Customer Service seriously, and want you to be satisfied. After you have listened to the album a couple of times you might decide that the its most famous cut (Judy in Disguise (With glasses)) is not even the best song on the LP.
The lyrics are tell stories about a range of characters, and show a sly sense of humor. The beat is clean and irrepressible. Yes, its a relic from the 1960s, complete with studio effects, and overall if you judge music on its merits you should love its inventiveness and melody based on Sgt Pepperisms of the times...
Who knows? Perhaps the collecting masses will finally rediscover this flash of brilliance
Formed as far back as 1956 and billed John Fred and the Playboys, this Baton Rouge, Louisiana group eventually changed their name to John Fred and His Playboy Band to avoid being mistaken for Gary Lewis and the Playboys, who had been ambushing the airwaves with their perky little pop tunes in the '60s. As an interesting side note, Gary Lewis covered John Fred and His Playboy Band’s best known song, “Judy In Disguise (With Glasses),” which appeared on his Gary Lewis Now! album.
So by the time John Fred and His Playboy Band’s third album JUDY IN DISGUISE (Paula Records) was released, they were already veterans of the scene. Several years prior, they achieved a flash of national recognition with the swinging “Shirley,” and in 1966 their freshman album, John Fred and His Playboys arrived. Of interesting note to GARAGE-ROCK collectors, the band's first and second albums are largely based on gritty garage grooves - vastly unknown but the bulk of each album hits the mark. The group morphed along with the mod/popsike & psychedelic song-crafts of the later '70s only to explode on the world with their smash "Judy In Disguise" featured on this album.
It was early in 1968, when the band finally garnered the major breakthrough they had been striving for, scoring a No. 1 transatlantic whopper with “Judy In Disguise (With Glasses).” A cheeky parody of the Beatles Sgt Pepper infused “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds,” the wildly catchy song was set to a highly infectious habitat and concluded to the psychedelic plucking of a sitar. As for another piece of trivia, a Texas band called the Fun and Games quoted “Judy In Disguise (With Glasses)” in “The Grooviest Girl In The World,” a minor hit from 1969 that also flaunted a bright and sunny West Coast beat.
Due to “Judy In Disguise (With Glasses),” John Fred and His Playboy Band were immediately typecast as either a novelty act or a blatantly commercial pop group. But those acquainted with their roots were totally aware of their blues and soul garage format which was really where they were at. John Fred possessed a rich, robust voice similar to that of Eric Burdon, while the band was taut and lively. Plenty of homegrown southern grit penetrated their material as well.
Although “Judy In Disguise (With Glasses)” may have been the calling card on this album, but every cut on the album has merit. Songs such as “Off The Wall,” “She Shot A Hole In My Soul,” “Most Unlikely To Succeed,” and “Up And Down” resonate with melody and movement. Funky rhythms, prompted by a cooperative combination of pepprerism arrangements and driving guitars captured John Fred and His Playboy Band’s flair for producing slick but tough sounds. Delivered in a talking narrative, the slow-burning “Sad Story” and the fragile “Sometimes You Just Can’t Win” key in as nice ballads. Last but definitely not least, the title track rocks with bleating cheerleader-fashioned choruses and pin-sharp hooks and arrangements.
John Fred and His Playboy Band continued to make records and stage gigs, but in the end “Judy In Disguise (With Glasses)” was to be their biggest claim to fame. John Fred regretfully passed away in 2005, leaving behind him a canon of cool efforts that are all too unforgivably overlooked. Masters of blues based soul pop and '60s garage-rock, John Fred and His Playboy Band coupled fun with quality — and their Judy In Disguise album ranks as a perfect example of their vision and abilities.
