Manfred Mann Chapter III had a British released Vertigo Swirl album in 1970, this, the 1969 first album is far superior ... the original (((PROMOTIONAL COPY!))) 1969 first pressing:

***STILL IN ORIGINAL FACTORY SHRINK WRAP ** and ....MINT

Organist and band leader Manfred Mann had ended his long running beat & pop rock band with the 1968 swansong "Mighty Quinn" (psych-pop) classic album ... revamoing his line-up and including early members, they took off into the entirely new direction of progressive rock, which had by '69 the first releases of such music...

So, out of left field in 1969 came Manfred Mann Chapter III. Totally unrelated to the pop years, this was a marriage of progressive jazz /rock. Of course, 1969 was the time when the cross-pollination of these styles held great promise. Many artists dipped into the waters in the next few years. There was some exciting music. Eventually the bandwagon got full and collapsed under the weight of record companies forcing everyone to "fuse" and it all blanded out. But the pioneering bands such as Manfred Mann Chapter III lived at the "rock" end of the progressive jazz-rock spectrum. They made some fairly serious but inspired music here. Most of it is riffy and some is heavy, yet it has energy and class. Mike Hugg's vocals sound a little like Dr John when he's spooky. Their version of the old Yardbirds classic "Mr You're A Better Man Than I" is terrific, as is several of the other cuts -- the instrumentation passages being executed to high standards for 1969, just as the Manfred Mann beatrock band had been in 1964.  There was a second, inferior volume of MM Chapter III that appeared on the 'prog rock' label Vertigo the next year -- but clearly doesn't touch these works!
